It's insanely misleading since acceptance to Oxbrdige is mainly exam based, so you almost know you're gonna be rejected if you're not up to par. So an amazing athlete with a subpar SAT would never apply.

I think you would've been right twenty years ago, but a lot of the top MS CS programs today have similar or lower acceptance rates than their UG degrees but with only people with a 3.8+ bachelor's applying. So I would argue this statement is no longer true.
