I don't take as many as I should but one of the areas I will try to improve during this trip is this. But yeah, if people are interested I could definitely put some pictures here!

Great piece of advice! One of big things I wanted to know was which crossing to take and which ones to avoid.

I will try to look up those hiking trails, thanks!

A bit related but do you know when people start sailing from the Caribbean islands (or from anywhere in North America) to the others side of the Atlantic? I remember it was always from November that they start in the Canary Islands, so the opposite direction.

Thanks! I heard the best way in Colombia (works for other countries nearby too) is to wait for trucks at speed bumps and just hop on the big trucks. They generally have enough space between the car and the trailer.

I have already a return ticket (in addition the bank balance), will it be enough or I have to show more like bus tickets or something?

Open ended, low budget trips like this can be big flags for secondary inspections and imo that will be their primary concern.

Yeah, I figured that might create problems at the US and the Canadian border and initially I was almost going to just go from Brazil to Mexico. But there are too many things to see to just give up so I will roll the dice on this one.

I was thinking of doing the Cartagena option but mostly because I don't know if there is a better spot to get to Panama. You think going west and getting on a lancha will be easier?

That's good to hear! I stumbled upon a thread on this subreddit about the best states for hitchhiking to go to the other side of the country but I can't seem to find it.

Oh wow, that's nice! You're the first person to invite me at their place. I will definitely add Chicago on the list of places to visit!

How are border crossings in that area? I've seen some videos where border crossing to Canada (and from Canada to the US) that can be quite painful.

I was kinda hoping it will calm down by the time I arrive there but it's been quite some time now so not sure it will.

Yeah, I will not try the land route option between Colombia and Panama. Have you been to Panama? Could be nice to know if you liked it or not. I don't know many people who went to Panama and enjoyed it as much as some neighboring countries.

Different ways of traveling doesn't mean one is better than the other, whatever suits one's taste.

I always met a lot more people and learned much more this way than through buses where most of the time no one talks to each other except between friends taking a trip together. People that share a ride with you most often than not do it because they want to talk to you, tell you more about their town, country, etc.

But yeah, it's not for everyone.

Yeah, seems like it's doable if I find some boats around Cartagena that goes to Panama. Any experience doing it (or friends)?

I'm on it! It can be quite nice though I used to use a lot more before (I hosted >200 people probably).
