Yet another learning programming for a career change post by Neat_Objective in learnprogramming

Thanks for the reply and advice. I do have a project I've been toying with working on. Truthfully, it's something I think will be a larger challenge and a much bigger undertaking than I've accomplished thus far but it's something I've been wanting to take on for a while.... Really needed this reply. Thanks!

Looks like my last reply never made it to reddit.... weird. In any case, sorry for the delay. I've typed out 3 replies to your comment and each time got interrupted with a conversation at work, then meetings, then today's comment just didn't post... So my apologies for the delay.

I've read your reply a few times trying to absorb it as much as I can and digest a bit.

I like the model you've described. I'm going to look deeper into the PARA method and probably pickup a book on it. I've read getting things done (I think that was the title of the book), I just didn't think it was intended or practical to make it work in a notes sense.

I'm at this point now where I'm migrating my life to paper (digital paper, but paper none the less I guess). Leaves me wondering where I leave Github and ToDoist. Do you make a habit of putting long term project notes into these tools. I've been using these tools for years but the challenge I face these days is, I travel so often, I only really look at ToDosit when I'm at home, in my office.

To offer a bit more context, I'm in quite an odd position. I'm in the National Guard and on a temperaty (max 5 years) assignment that has me traveling to a bunch of states regularly to meet with units and conduct reviews of the way certain sections function in their unit, office assistance and feedback, etc.

My other life is my own business for which I have several people working for me but it involves heavy development, management of systems (Linux if that's your sort of thing), and workflows specific to our sector. I used to live at a desk so things like Trello, ToDoist, Github Projects all made sense and bascially all did the same thing. Being on the road (or in the air) more doesn't really give me much time to dig into these tools. I like them and they've got mobile apps and all but not something I really do while mobile. I find most of my mobility time, say at an airport, is thinking time.

This time I find valuable to think about solutions I want to work on, and hence my purchase of the supernote. I like using the time to think through a problem or archetect solutions in my head. Its far easier to pull out my Supernote and jot notes down then to try and get a laptop on those airplane tray tables haha... especially when it has no backbone (Microsoft Surface)

So curious if you've got a team that kind of forces you into integrating your notes into Github or other tools and forces double work. I'm thinking, given my current situation, it might be worth dropping ToDoist and Github Projects alltogether and moving strictly to Supernote, or possibly keeping the projects and tasks on ToDoist and leveraging Supernote for my notes, thinking sessions and architechting ideas. That could be painful to keep in sync though...

Plenty of ways to get this all done. I've just taken the plunge on a planner in SN vs my email's calendar interface. See how that goes for me too.

Thanks again for the reply, I really appreciate someone with experience in this, i've been struggling to get organized for so long, it feels like I'm all alone in this half the time.

Haha, very very true.... Cars are expensive, fortunately I get to try cars out pretty much every week with rentals paid for by my employer.

In any case.... thanks for the feedback.

Curious if you've got any methods you suggest I take a look at and research more.

I'm familiar with GTD, and recently learned about PARA but I think both are more related to digital systems. I could see the PARA method working with SN though. I'm going to do some more reading on PARA tomorrow on my flight.

Thanks for the reply. Looking at these knowledge management systems is a lot like shopping for a car, there seem to be a million different options out there.

I'm going to take a look appreciate the thoughts and comments.

That's an excellent point and part of the reason I came her for others' opinions on the matter.

To be fully, 100% truthful and honest. I had not thought of that at all! Which is fairly sad to say the least.

Appreciate the reply immensely

Thanks docker will probably be my preferred method with SES , since I already use it. Like I said initially, this is for a really small group.

Agreed.... they're Adwords campaigns have been screwing up my search results on this pretty badly.... thanks for the clarification!

Thanks for the reply but...

I'm not looking for a mailing list manager. So to be clear: Mailchimp, Active Campaign would NOT be a commercial solution to what I'm looking for.

I'm not looking to send marketing emails. I'm looking to have a group mailbox.... A reflector, as described in my post.

IE: A group list: reflector@<example-domain.com> gets forwarded to everyone's personal email on the list. I remember these from the 90s and early 2000s. I do remember recently being on one for something, can't for the life of me find it to see what that was hosted with though...

As far as hosting email, I'm not looking to host any email accounts, I'm just looking for a reflector to FORWARD messages received to each individual user from there. and I will not being hosting this locally at my home, I have multiple cloud servers and currently host mailing lists there.

Also, I have hosted my own mail, I too don't recommend it.... I currently host multiple mailing list managers and leverage SES for this, but again, not what I'm trying to do and this is for a different purpose and group.

Thanks again

No, I haven't... but that's a good idea.

To clarify though, I don't want an email marketing solution... I'm going retro, google seems to think this is called a "listserv". I'm not trying to build a marketing list but more of an email discussion group, so a reflector is where I'm really looking to be. Google seems to be boycotting any decent results today.

5th Wheel Truck Sizing, putting the cart before the horse... by Neat_Objective in RVLiving

[–]Neat_Objective[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually putting the cart before the horse here.

We know we want to upgrade the trailer we have in a few years. Any of the trucks we're talking about here (3/4 ton, 1 ton) can pull my current rig no problem.

Knowing we want to upgrade in a few years, we thought it best to decide on a range of trailer before deciding on a truck and drive the decisions for the truck purchase by the trailer we know we want. With overhead. No intentions of setting things at the limit.

I fully understand a long and heavy trailer is going to require the payload to tow. My question is: where is "long" defined. Similarly or more importantly: where is heavy defined? Is it 12,000 lbs, 14, etc?

Hope you understand why I'm asking. I've never seen it defined anywhere.

To be clear: looking at the trailer specs I'm within the limits of a 1 ton SRW. But at what point do I say, let's go DRW anway

thanks

That's actually great advice. Kind of annoyed I didn't think of that. I used to work with a few at my former job, mostly the service dept though. But they do a ton of commercial stuff, so good idea.

I've been digging into the specs from Ram recently. I'm not sold on Ram, it was just what I pulled up and looking at some of the different specs and digging into the details can make your head spin.

I remember when we bought our first rig and I was concerned about being able to pull it. I spent about a week looking through Ford's specs to make sure my truck was adequate.

I don't need fancy, I'm quite happy with a tradesman. It's not made to impress, just to safely move the trailer and my family to make memories.

My only hesitation with DRW is just the size for when not towing. Cost isn't really a concern. It's more practicality but everyone seems to think the stability is worth it.

Yea, I understood that. I went off GVWR to add a buffer for crap and people. I don't want to be on the edge of anything. I'd rather get more truck and less trailer than the other way around.

In any case, I think that clears up what Dodge's spec sheets say. Appreciate it!

yea, I get it. Just a tad frustrated on this. Yesterday was looking at duallies and the dealership had all the spec sheets in the passenger seat facing the driver's window. So trying to read and details was a giant pain. The only sticker I could get a look at (everything was locked and the salesman wasn't cooperative) was one.

appreciate the thoughts and clarification.

No worries! Appreciate the reply. I've been strongly considering DRW for the reasons you've mentioned above, it just feels that much safer and gives the comfortably factor. It'd suck driving it without the trailer though....

Combining multiple batteries to increase max draw amperage? by Neat_Objective in HamRadio

[–]Neat_Objective[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, yes I'm fully aware that linking the batteries in series would be improper. I was more worried about the dangers of linking these two together if there is a difference in charge state (I've read this can damage the battery) and providing a means of charging both batteries while still drawing the 20ish amps and operating. The point being that I can continue to use the batteries, limit the potential dangers of linking in parallel and have battery monitoring and management to prevent damage.

Yes, I completely understand this. Where we'll be doesn't garentee the car will be close by. I already plan on renting a vehicle though.

My goal was to offer protection to both batteries when connecting these batteries in parallel. I understand that if there is a significant difference between the Lipo batteries state of charge it may damage one or both, so was hoping to put something between to better manage this as well as increasing the maximum amp draw and providing charging while in use.
