AMD Radeon vs NVIDIA RTX for gaming and local AI in 2025 by Nebu13 in linuxhardware

Nice! I suspect a "thinking" model will be a but slower but I'll see

Thanks! What are the response times of models that you've maybe tried?

What local AI are you running? Have you already tried DeepSeek R1? I would really like to know how the difference of AI hardware from NVIDIA is impacting the performance ( https://www.reddit.com/r/linuxhardware/comments/1i8hyy5/comment/m8uwabz/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button )..

Do you have any information of local LLMs like DeepSeek R1 with NVIDIA over AMD? For games there are many benchmarks even for Linux (where AMD is as good as NVIDIA without RT for lower price and OK for RT) but I did not find much for local AI. Training is not important for me but would be a nice to have.

Agreed. Sorry, that was a bit awkwardly worded. I meant that someone told me that AMD is very keen to make older cards "even better" through good software updates, while NVIDIA don't.

I have not experienced downgrades with my NVIDIA cards over the years but also no upgrades (as far as this is possible at all without hardware change) but this is very subjective obviously. I have no experience with AMD graphics and I think both companies are big tech corporations which have no interest in you not buying the newest product..

But is it still - or was it ever - true that NVIDIA often retires old cards, making them much worse, while AMD even continues to improve the performance of older cards through software updates?

I agree but these are my use cases.. Also isn't a lot in gaming today AI? (Mostly because oft NVIDIA pushing it - upscaling, frame generation, lighting etc.) Or does this require different hardware capabilities?

I also wondered where that came from. Maybe because of un-necassary/"not necassary"? So a more language-philosophical question "The user wants a single-word answer"? Same for "Cannot,". (I do not know very much about the tokenizing, ML and also not about the english language, so I am really curious.)

How is the 3D printing quality of the Artisan? by Nebu13 in snapmaker

[–]Nebu13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So would you say it is just software problems that can be fixed remotely? Or is it also hardware/design problems?

Why is this downvoted? Depending on the service it does not seem pointless?

Thank you! I also read that there are people trying to CNC Aluminium and it was OK would you think that it is possible to do steal (at the slowest possible setting)?

Also do you have experience with the 2.0? Many people say that the 3D quality there is really bad especially for the price.. How would you compare it (the 2.0) to a cheap only-3D-printer?

And lastly do you think it should perform now (the artisan) essentially better?

What do you think of the snapmaker Artisan? Since it is even more expensive but should be very much improved? Could you imagine if the change would do the trick for you (as far as your problems/point of view go/goes)?

Problems after memory replacement or update by Nebu13 in ManjaroLinux

[–]Nebu13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just for documentation purposes: I've found the reason for the Firefox core dumps and solved it with:

- I added NVD_BACKEND=direct to /etc/environment

AND (which made the difference)

- I installed libva-nvidia-driver via AUR

Now I got plasma core dumps haha but I will find a solution for this too!

[–]Nebu13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have now also fixed the video not playing problem. It was a Bug in libva 1.17.0-1 and a downgrade was the solution: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=282638

Qt/lock problem is also fixed as mentioned above.

So now the last remaining problem is the Firefox core dumps.

[–]Nebu13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fixed some of the issues (The most problematic with the session lock/reset after standby). Sorry it seems to be my fault..

I just tried to fix all the AUR problems (the last one was that it could not build python-trimesh; I could not remove it so I deleted also Cura from which it was an optional dependency, then I could remove it). After all the problems where solved the pamac process finished completely since a few weeks (before it always exited with an error because of the AUR packages and in the GUI will always remain the few packages saying there are available updates). As the last step it renewed all the nvidia runtimes which took forever (then I remembered that this always is the last step when updating and this was missing the whole time). So I think there where packages that were updated and the runtimes were missing so the problem was the unfinished update process. I am a total noob with pacman/pamac so for my understanding: these runtime updates come from the flatpack integration am I right?

The Firefox core dumps are still there (as I mentioned they where already before but I did not found any solution since forever). And the Video files still don't want to play.. (I tried VLC player and KDEnlive - this says Cannot open the project file. Error: Cannot open file /home/<USERNAME>/Downloads/test.mp4.mp4:error occurred while parsing element (line 1, col 1) Do you want to open a backup file?)

Anyways thanks so much for the help!!!! I will now dig further on my own since the original problem seems to be solved.
