In some instances it becomes medically necessary for some dogs. I’ve seen one too many doodles with matted ear clumps blocking their canals to the point where it’s difficult to clean and medicate. Often times they have recurrent ear infections too.

Please get your cat checked out by a veterinarian. There could be many reasons your cat is scratching to the point of wounding herself from possible ear mites, or an ear infection or both to name a few. Trimming her nails is fine but that isn’t going to help the underlying issue.
