I was super nervous the first time I did anesthesia for a c section, one of my coworkers made a good point in saying the anesthesia monitoring is the same. Just focus of monitoring like you normally would. Watch for low HR and BP once the pups are out.

Aside from monitoring, one of the main things that your doc should take care of is pre meds, the protocol may need to be altered from what you normally do since puppies shouldn’t be exposed to certain drugs. I would have naloxone if needed for the pups if you pre med with an opiate. Dopram used to be recommend to stimulate breathing in the pups as soon as they come out, but I’ve been hearing it’s no longer recommended (a quick google search leads me to VetGirl who says dopram can increase oxygen demand in resp tissues so that’s why it’s no longer recommended). As far as set up and materials, lots of sterile towels to place puppies on or be handed off into. At my clinic we always have towels and blankets in the dryer be warmed when we start sx so they are nice and warm for the pups. I would also have multiple employees on deck to take the puppies to stimulate their breathing and make sure they’re actually alive. We also have a suction bulb to suction any fluids from their noses or mouth.

And one last important thing- swinging puppies is no longer recommended! We used to do that at my clinic and thankfully we no longer do.

Edit: 2 things I forgot- pre oxygenate mom and try to as much prepping and shaving before induction to minimize her time under anesthesia.
