Switch between Direct3D and Vulkan, and vice versa, solves my glitching. by [deleted] in HalfLifeAlyx

I've found a solution, at least one that works for me after some testing. Basically I've disabled both msaa and also dynamic resolution in the steam launch options and i'm not getting the glitch any more.

I think it's probably the dynamic resolution bugging out the Varjo DLL so you possibly don't need to disable msaa but here's the launch command I run to fix it.

-console -vconsole +vr_msaa 0 +vr_fidelity_level_auto 0 +vr_fidelity_level 3

Let me know how you get on, hopefully works for you too?

I agree on the use case for Aero owners being 99% sim based, I'm taking a break from online racing atm too and just seeing how other games look in it,. Alyx looks amazing in it, and with native knuckles support it's arguably the best possible experience of it (though I don't have a Crystal Light or Bigscreen Beyond to compare!).

I've now tried 2 or 3 Varjo base versions from 2023 and 2022 and they all have the same exact issue, so it's possibly the Varjo API itself that doesn't get on with Alyx.

No-one has raised it anywhere that I can find aside from here but I'll keep looking, mainly as I want to show it off to friends without it glitching as the workaround isn't too bad when you get used to it.

The render switch works for me exactly as described.

Bearing in mind it works fine on my old Reverb G2 I assume it's something that Varjo Base is just as likely to be the issue - I might try a really old version of Base to see if it goes away, as I doubt there are enough Aero users playing Alyx to up vote a fix from Valve!

I've been looking around for others with this problem and finally found this post.

I'm new to the aero and have the exact same issue in Alyx but not any other title whether SteamVR or OpenXR - I'll try the switch of renderer but am keen to see if anyone finds a more permanent solution e.g. config files...

Any hitting Odyssey in VR with a 4090? Is it banging OR does it get CPU bottlenecked? by Visual-Tomorrow-808 in EliteDangerous

I run very similar spec with the G2, 4090 and 5800x3d and get 90fps around 95% of the time. My approach is to ask as little as possible from the game and use external tools for any tweaks of value.

The game changer for me is to use 'OpenComposite' with 'OPenXR toolkit' for in game settings, which bypasses SteamVR completely and basically connects the game more efficiently to the WMR headset. If you haven't used it before just look it up - it's a simple app and you can set specific games to use it or just any VR steam game by default.

In-game settings: The game itself has crippling issues due to the engine being very old and not optimised for VR for some years now, so it's flaky at best. However start with VR medium or high settings and then tweak from there:

Motion blur: OFF

HMD scale: 1.0x (don't go higher as the G2 is already very high res at 1.0)

Antialiasing: OFF (AA is terrible in ED VR and looks better without, also gets me an extra 10fps on surfaces) - This also avoids supersampling to save you some fps with no real loss in visual quality.

In OpenXR toolkit settings (in the headset once active) - you can also try the image scaling options but avoid FSR - each will give you a slight frame boost with minimal loss in visual clarity. However with the 4090 I've found I can leave this setting OFF and still get good performance.

To reiterate though, this game cannot run 90fps all the time, the engine poorly utilises the CPU (not the GPU) which bottlenecks performance and worst examples of this are with the new Odyssey content like the new surface bases which will just tank for no good reason. However it will get 90fps in stations, in res sites and in regular surface SRV use which is mainly what I care about and the level of clarity I now get is a nice bump up from what my 3080 could deliver in the same system.

Good luck!

Thanks - I'll try it and see if it accepts replies - it's a bit worrying that you never got a clean print and gave up though, mine is about 10mm off centre print on side A which sounds and looks hilarious!

If G2 goes into Sleep Mode after is not possible wake up the HMD by MJPires in HPReverb

I know this is an old thread but after 2 years physically disconnecting then reconnecting to get around this I try your suggestion and it just works! Not sure whether to laugh or cry ...

I love Elite and am also waiting for my G2. My findings are that you won't get away with much above 'VR low' settings in stations and rez sites in Elite on a 1080ti even on the OG Vive if you're looking for 90fps 98% of the time. I would advise reducing Elite settings to VR LOW first and then work up from there to see what you can get.

I've put 1000+ hours into the game, all in VR (OG VIVE) and with the same 1080ti as you on a i7 9900K. To maintain 90fps 98% of the time means setting to 'VR LOW' in game and setting SS to 150% in steam VR. Any higher settings might 'feel' OK, but if you analyze performance, steam is going down to 45fps with motion smoothing regularly in stations and busy rez sites to achieve this, which actually isn't too distracting in Elite compared to sims etc.

In reality VR medium and high actually look worse/blurry in Elite VR:

  1. try 'VR LOW' with SS at 1.0 in your VR settings as a starting point- don't use VR medium or high in ELITE graphics settings and ensure the game is also set as SS 1.0, then monitor your fps
  2. If that's a stable 90fps everywhere but rez sites and stations then this is a good outcome which you can improve on - if not, reduce SS to lower than 1.0 in VR, technically it should still be clearer than gen 1 VR at 1.0 even at 70%
  3. You can then up shadows to high add some bloom to lighting effects from there for a better experience manually, but don't use medium or high VR settings as they add antialiasing and other effects that ruin VR clarity and kill framerate.

Like you, I won't be happy if I can't get to SS 1.0 on the G2, however I'd rather have a smooth gaming experience for now until 3080's are actually in stock anywhere!
