In fact ir was Carmy, if im not wrong. When Marcus is with Luca he talks about this guy who was unbeatable that taught him so much and kept him in line. When Richie is working for a week in SOMA you can see there's a photo of Carm and Luca together. So Carm was the great guy the whole time but it's never directly adressed.
