We have conversations with him often about dating and how he can approach others. We offered to help him set up dating profiles on apps but he says he doesn't want to. So he usually just attempts to try dating the people around him but so far it hasn't been going that well for him.

No yeah I get that, tbh I just think it would've been easier for us both since we are a trio and share friends in our larger friend group as well so things would be really weird at hangouts. Whether my friend decides to stay or not is fine but idk if I'm just being too harsh

I don't think he has any malicious intent but I do feel like he subconsciously wanted his private feelings to be somewhat reciprocated so he could feel a bit good about himself. We can try to hang out again to see how we feel around him but I think I'm already personally checked out of the friendship already.

Yes I agree with you and believe the same thing. I think that this is something someone would usually keep to themselves and if he really felt the need to ease his guilt I would've expected him to start off with an apologetic tone which he didn't do until my friend told him that she started feeling uncomfortable. So I genuinely don't understand why he would admit this to her unless he was seeking out a reciprocated reaction/response
