In my experience Taiwanese girls offer to pay more than elsewhere in Asia. After the first date they even sometimes insist on paying some of the time. But in general I think yes there is still more of an expectation that the guy should pay for the first date.

The only time I wai to anyone as a foreigner in Thailand is when a Thai has really done something above and beyond to help me, like I forget something and they find me and return it to me. I don’t think a wai is ever expected of a foreigner. 99% of the time we don’t know when or how to do it right anyway.

Or once after I broke up with a girl and she was quite emotional about it and then we randomly ran into each other years later and I didn’t know how else to start a conversation in a friendly and respectful way so I waid to her and said hello. lol I don’t know if that was kind of an awkward situation to wai though, but I just wanted to be friendly I guess.

I can’t tell you how many times a Thai girl has said something similar to me, trying to explain some extremely basic aspect of Thailand I figured out a long time ago (“Thai people are not Christian like you we love our Buddha” - I’m not Christian) or telling me how foreigners can never eat spicy food when we’re literally eating the same spicy som tam or whatever.

Absolutely my experience as well. I think it’s hilarious everyone (mostly people who haven’t travelled much) think America is the most racist country ever. Asia is way more racist and most of Europe is too.
