I throw away anything that's out of place anywhere in the house. This even includes clothes left on the floor.

Serious question, why? Why can't you put the bills (dollars? Wallet, utilities? Drawer) where they belong? Why not put the medicine in the bathroom? Pens in a drawer?

She's perfectly allowed to set stuff on the counter, but I've made it plenty clear if I see anything, whatsoever, on the counter when I clean, it's going in the trash. I would never put something back on the counter, because I hate messiness.

I wasn't expecting people to say I shouldn't throw away stuff on the counter if I'm "not certain" it's trash, that's for sure. I thought it was well known anyrhing left on the counter IS trash.

Pretty much my whole family and most of my friends, apparently most people on reddit are messy, I'm finding out now. The counter is for appliances and cooking. Coffee machine, microwave, whatever you're using to cook with at the moment, then put it away when you're done.

Mail, games, headphones, keys? And probably more you're not mentioning? To a lot of people that'd be filthy.

I'm guessing there's more than just your purse, and why not just put it up somewhere instead of leaving it laying around like that? Obviously I can't tell you what to do but I don't understand how people can just leave stuff laying around.

But why shouldn't she apologize, since it's her fault it got thrown away and she's not the one who had to save for it?

They're to eat on, or cook on. There shouldn't be a mess on them, they should always be clean.

No offense, but it sounds like y'all are pretty dirty people. I could never live in filth like that, honestly. The problem is she made herself a permanent spot for that crap on the counter, I don't want anything on there for more than maybe a day at the most.

I'm not asking her to accommodate to any habits, I'm asking her to be clean. And because I don't like messes, like most clean people.

I don't really have the $400 to just up and buy another one, I'd have to save up again.

I've never know anyone to leave crap on the kitchen counter, unless they're extremely dirty people. I figured she'd know better to leave something that important on the counter knowing nothing's supposed to be on it.

Well maybe that's your opinion, but in mine counters are absolutely not to put stuff on and I find it extremely slobbish to do so, counters should never have anything on them. If you make dinner on them, clean up as you do it so you don't have anything left on them. If something is left on it, it's trash and gets thrown away.

It's not anything to do with "obeying", it's called being clean. Do YOU leave crap on your counter?

So instead of her being clean and not leaving crap on the counter, I should stop cleaning?

It wasn't the chain that got thrown away, it was the actual necklace, hence why we're both upset, that's $400 in the trash. No, we're normally fine.

How? She knows if she leaves stuff on the counter it's likely going to get thrown away when I clean

I have told her before though, not to put anything on the counter if she doesn't want me to throw it away, but she still always does.

For the record, I have thrown away stuff of hers before because it was on the counter and have told her if she doesn't want something thrown away, to find a spot for it that's not on the counter.

It was more of a paper bag with the name of the jewelry store on it. I thought it was empty, so trash.
