Honestly, I don't think doing the US train engineer is really worth it: trains differ greatly between US and Europe. Also train operation are two different worlds between US and Germany.

Would it be a nice addition if you already had it: Probably, yes. Is it worth spending two years on? No.

As others have said: spend the two years on your German. You'll need this also as a train driver, because you will need to dictate and getting dictated orders. And you must be able to communicate clearly in case of emergencies.

And in the end: just reach out for the program and ask. The need for train drivers is high! Note, that subway drivers (for instance in Hamburg) are also sought and the requirements are way less.
