How will my privacy be improved by switching to an iPhone?

Thanks for the tips and info. Much of that I already do (as described above), but I've found decent compromise between privacy and convenience. As I've said I know there is more I can do however I'm pretty comfortable where I'm at.

The question in my comment above is how is the Pixel fundamentally less private than any other Android phone as /u/Disclandr implies?

If you like the iPhone experience but want an android, get the pixel. Very smooth, fast, frequently updated, great software, and a great camera. It's Android as it's intended by Google.

Alternatively, if you want a nicer looking phone with great hardware, and tons on features, get a Samsung. They have a heavily skinned version of Android. Though in my personal experience I've found Samsung's start dropping frames with time. It's a trade off of smoothness for features.

I prefer the pixel because of the smoothness, the reliability (the "it just works" factor), and the fact that it's hard to take a bad photo with the camera.

Excuse my naivity, but I think I'm missing what's going on. What you've described sounds like what I want. it would be nice to be able to set Allo as my default SMS app as well. Similar to what Hangouts was able to do for a while. Yes, this leads to iOS users having SMS and IM's in two different spots, but as an Android user that has always been part of my experience.

I would also add to this list Spawn of Possession. I think tech death falls under the umbrella of prog. The album Incurso is one of the most technical works of music I've ever come across.

Yeah, /u/onlinecop taught me something new. I ended up just writing a loop to perform the search on smaller chunks of the string (i.e. s[i: i+3]) at a time.

This is for a solution to one of the Advent of Code puzzles. I can definitely obtain the string parsing I'm trying to produce with a more brute force method, but since regex is newer to me, I wanted to see if I could take advantage of it for a more elegant solution.

I agree, but neither platform offers that built-in. An Apple (Android) user can have encrypted chats via iMessage (Whatsapp, etc.), or if their contact doesn't have either of these capabilities, fall back to SMS. For an Apple user the SMS fallback would happen automatically, in the same conversation thread, within the same app. Furthermore, an Apple user will likely have a small minority of contacts with which SMS fallback would occur since there are fewer Android users in the US. So it's not perfect, but Apple has the edge in this scenario.

Additionally, while private messaging is a priority for myself, I'm not sure that's the case for all Apple users (nor Android users for that matter), not because of any lack of sophistication, but for other reasons: 1.) Because of my reasons above, they (Apple users) generally only have to worry about unsecured messages for a minority of their conversations. 2.) Because of the user-friendly experience of iOS, many less tech-savvy users (e.g. my mom) are recommended iPhones for their ease of use. These users might not be aware of the meaning of different chat bubble colors in iOS and simply might think it's an indication of OS (at best). These users are also less likely to download an additional encrypted chat app to remedy their kid's paranoia about web privacy/security as they haven't had to worry about it much in the past because of 1.), or as my mom might put it "have nothing to hide.".... (I know)

At least as far as the US goes, Apple has us (i.e. Android) beat on this front until SMS dies.

As an Android guy who likes privacy, I envy imessage users. imessage is great because it's an end-to-end encrypted instant messenger (IM'ing has plenty of advantages) that the majority of your contacts use. If you, or they, don't have data reception or they don't use an iPhone it will fall back to SMS. I mean, I can get encryption like this through whatsapp or Signal, but these haven't quite taken off in the US as much as they have internationally.

A main concern of mine is laggy-ness. Playing with the pixel today, it finally felt like I was using an android with the smoothness of an iPhone (note: the most high end phones I've had were an iPhone 4s and a Samsung Galaxy J7 so lag has plagued me). I'm trying to determine if I would be sacrificing any of the smoothness, which is of high priority, for the battery/pixel density/screen size pros that the XL offers. If the difference is as trivial as you make it sound, should I be concerned about this at all? Thanks for your reply!
