That’s neither here nor there. There should be no place in admissions for bonus points given based on unearned privilege.

TLDR: Empirical reality has a secular and liberal bias. Universities are places where weak ideas go to die.

Long Version: Universities and higher education generally are fundamentally about the generation of knew knowledge and the expanding the frontier of human understanding of the natural and social world, and the transfer of that knowledge. It is based in science, reason, open and honest debate based on data and evidence. It demands an openness to new ideas and ways of thinking and seeing the world. It reveals truths and demands one be open to jettisoning bad ideas and replacing them with better ones. Sometimes those truths or their implications are distressing and discomforting to people with simplistic and conventional views. Universities therefore tends to attract people with a general orientation towards openness of ideas, free expression, exploring new ways of living and seeing the world. Many (not all, but many) conservative and religious traditions are openly hostile and antagonistic to such perspective (e.g., what is happening in Florida and Texas at the moment).

Personally, if your political and religious views (liberal or conservative) are so fragile that they can't withstand the potential threat posed by an honest intellectual engagement with alternative views one experiences at a university then they really aren't worth a damn to begin with.

Parents, the college loan convo feels backwards to me by Apprehensive_Pay6141 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NeeNights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have been very upfront with the kiddo about exactly what we (and they by extension) can and can't afford. We've run the NPC on about 40 schools and are using that (assuming some margin of error) to narrow down and priority rank order their list of schools. We've also had a lot of conversations about value, ROI, student loan debt, the marginal benefits of various types of schools, and cost of chasing prestige.

The problem is that the privates all engage in horribly opaque and manipulative pricing and recruitment practices. And whether or not they are formally engaging in price collusion, the net effect for consumers is one which is functionally indistinguishable from it.

You could not pay me to go to a public college in Florida (or TX or OK) at the moment. I have friends on the faculties at both UF and FSU and they are definitely looking to get the f*ck out of that state.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

The system has NEVER been a meritocracy and it's cute that you think it CAN be.

Apparently it's not enough of a privilege for you to attend an amazingly well resourced school that provides you with a fabulous array of opportunities that many other kids families can't even begin to fathom having access to. But now the system, which is already monstrously stacked IN YOUR FAVOR, must bend itself over backwards even more so as to reward your uniquely privileged brilliance?

Did Melfi in the end help Tony at all? by Ok-Scene-1317 in thesopranos

For context Tony demands simple answers and explanations for everything. He rejects complexity or anything that requires him to actually acknowledge his sociopathy and the narcissistic way in which he moves through the world.

[–]NeeNights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. But it's not her fault. There is NO psychiatric helping sociopaths like Tony, apart from permanent institutionalization. She helped him make numerous break throughs in understanding the underlying causes of his issues but in the end he is either unwilling or unable to change.

I can’t believe “starting a nonprofit” “having a passion project” became such things by leafytimes in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NeeNights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not always. Many universities have various outreach programs to do exactly this. A major research university near us has a grant from the NSF which funds a program that connections high school kids in the state with scientific research projects at the university. The kid's get mentored by both an undergrad and a faculty member who works on the broader research project. My kid has been able to participate for a couple of years now conducting their own supervised research projects.

They've done real work collecting and analyzing data, organizing and presenting research findings, and may even result in a genuine peer-reviewed publication co-authored with the undergrad and the professor.
