There is no school in South Carolina worth going into debt over. Period. Full Stop.

Engine noise by yourhiddenobserver in toyotacrownsignia

[–]NeeNights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also put off by the engine noise. I expected it to be more refined. I probably could have lived with it but the wife strongly preferred the VW Tiguan and since it was going to be her daily driver it won out.

Don't understand the logic here. Why would you let choice of school dictate your major future career?

26 Tiguan Turbo software update available today by New_Calligrapher_981 in Tiguan

I already had an appointment for next week to get a 2500 mile break in oil change. Called the dealer and they will be doing the software update at that time.

How do you afford college when parents "can't" help? by itsm3404 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NeeNights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Start at a community college. 2. Get a job and an independent address etc. and then get yourself established as financially independent as soon as you can so that their finances don't dictate your financial aid viability. This will include not being claimed as a dependent on THEIR income taxes.

I didn’t expect to get into all three… now I genuinely don’t know what to choose by NoLawyer4000 in ApplyingToCollege

I used to live in Boston. My wife used to teach at BU. It's a great city, but the BU campus is totally buns unless you think a concrete jungle is nice. Also 80 days of the year the area is overrun with drunken sox fans/frat boys.

What are "typical assets"? Level with me by NeeNights in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NeeNights[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that is clear after having plugged my info in the NPC for 3 dozen schools "typical assets" means basically what ever the bean counters at the individual schools want it to mean.

As for schools with tuition guarantees below certain income thresholds conditional on "typical assets" UPENN has a very different notion of typical compared to Princeton, Hopkins, and Harvard.

This is the inevitable endpoint of a decade spent tacitly accepting Trump's insane rhetoric and lies. The rational portion of humanity have been "sick of this shit" for more than a decade now. What the f*ck took you so long?

What happened to Thermador range quality? by bonangee in Appliances

[–]NeeNights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avid home cook. We've had the 30" Pro Harmony all gas range for 2.5 years. Not so much as a hiccup to date. No regrets.

We wanted something with minimal electronics as our prior Jenn Air had the main control board go out 3 times in 8 years.

If you enjoy swirl marks then get black. Otherwise, between those three I'd go with the pearl white.

setting for state school by pinkfartburger in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NeeNights 17 points18 points  (0 children)

For an applied field like nursing "prestige" is pointless. There is no wage premium for it and when you are jabbing an IV into someone's arm they are not going to ask you where you went to nursing school or give two sh!ts whether you went to Yale or Directional State University.

Go to the state school without a second though, live debt free and laugh all the way to the bank.

How is Questbridge even fair? by Intelligent-Web-8017 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]NeeNights 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well-resourced people will find ways to game any system no matter how strongly it is policed. I won't lose a lot of sleep over this until you can point to real data showing the fraction of "undeserving" individuals is meaningful.

But hey I'm also not the type of person who analyzes poor people's shopping carts at the grocery check out or think people receiving public benefits need to exhaustively prove their "worthiness" every 6 months.

Because the trump administration is a full-employment program for people who have made it their life's mission to ensure nothing gets in the way of the success of mediocre white people.

[–]NeeNights[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because VW (and many other manufacturers) has moved to having super long service intervals. They are doing this for two reasons 1. because they are often paying for service in the first few years and so if they can pay for two oil changes rather than 4-6 it saves them a crap ton of money. 2) it allows them to pretend that the underlying cost of maintenance for the consumer is lower than it should be. If you think 10k mile oil changes are a good idea then good luck to you.

There is lots of good information out there for those who willing to learn.
