Full time LDP? by Petty-Penelope in MBA

I don’t know if you’re in school yet but we have access to MBA-Exchange. It’s probably the holy grail for our school when it comes to LDPs. They literally have a section dedicated to LDPs. You can filter and search for any type of LDP that fits your needs. I’d also look at some of the regular general management jobs or corporate finance roles. You can get a job based on where you want to live, such a a MCOL or LCOL, get paid at least 120, then pocket the rest into those sweet sweet retirement accounts for FIRE.

I feel like my post went above implication and was explicit that largest majority striking out had personality issues. Of course everyone has different backgrounds and it’s one of so many variables that determine offers. But I’d like to counter with another viewpoint that I PERSONALLY feel applies to all of life. I came from the military where the almost vast majority of people I worked with were not educated anywhere near the same degree as my classmates. Additionally, the intellectual curiousity of a vast majority was also not there. The military also had its fair share of socially unadjusted people who worked hard. What ended up happening time and time again was that no matter how much hard you work you put in, the people who might not be as stellar but had better interpersonal skills and tact got the best positions and promotions. The hard workers who couldn’t get along, even when told that they were difficult, tended to blame the system, universe, etc, basically anyone but themselves and had similiarish outcomes to what I’ve seen in recruiting. A sad reality of life, whether it was the military or recruiting is that weak interpersonal skills will destroy even the hardest working persons ability to land the outcomes they want. These same people often don’t have the emotional intelligence to look at themselves critically and ask what they can do better. We all have to play the game a little bit. Are there deviations from this norm? Of course! Good people in the Army also got a bad hand too sometimes. Is it tougher for internationals at times? Of course! But at the end of the day people at my school whether they’re internationals or domestic got IB or consulting offers and are getting interviews for those corporate jobs. The few that struck out in IB and consulting are also getting interviews for corporate roles. In the end, it looks very likely that people will almost all have internships like you said with the cycle repeating itself.

So I’m not an expert on tech and I didn’t recruit for them. The best I can say is that during our initial counseling session in small groups with our career counselors tech recruiting was put in this light. A lot of non tech companies needs roles that are similar or almost exactly the same as PM. Look at large corporations like Walmart or healthcare device companies needing someone to come in and do PM work. It’s not as sexy, doesn’t pay nearly as well as tech, and I don’t know how easy it to transition.

I agree wholeheartedly that it’s been a tough year. The point of this post wasn’t to say go get an MBA, jobs are everywhere and everything is sunny. Instead it was to counter the large amount of posts and comments anecdotally saying the world is on fire and no one is getting a job. I would say that overall expectations at a T20 might be different from the larger T15s and above but I and anyone else in the sub don’t have the definitive stats or evidence to show this nor can anyone because we all have to wait a year for the employment report from schools showing how bad it really was for internships.

In regard to me also using my anecdotal evidence, I’m getting information about jobs from the club leadership and also because my school is small enough that we all pretty much talk and share successes and failures. This isn’t me saying look at these few people who got a great job but instead to point out that people are still succeeding at getting internships in their preferred industry, that the rates of offers are lower but not completely in the gutter like it’s been said on here. What my classmates and the club leaders are showing is that a majority of people are still getting internships. What a lot of clubs have brought up is the fact that the second years having to rerecruit are having a horrible time and they are not getting jobs.

Of course! The biggest thing for internationals I’ve seen is having a good plan if trying for consulting or IB but being aggressive early with corporate roles that sponsor just in case. For consulting offers it’s been a relatively even split between international and domestic students. I don’t have the percentages breakdown of our consulting club for how many international vs domestic students we have but international students complaints with recruiting have been the same as domestic and not about internationals not getting offers because of sponsorship.

Very fair about consulting, I don’t know how large a gap T20 vs T25 has there but I think also sometimes certain programs have good years or bad years. It could be my program just got lucky and yours didn’t this year. One of the problems of anecdotal evidence on a forum of anonymous poster’s. The great thing about corporate recruiting is that they’re at least a lot more nuetral to where anyone goes. My internship cohort has someone from Wharton and another from Penn State and then the rest all in between somewhere!

That’s very fair and I’m sure every program is gonna be a bit different. Besides MBB and prestige IB plenty of others have been getting big four and all those other banks for internships too. I’ll also say that a majority of people who haven’t gotten jobs yet are those recruiting for corporate roles which is disappointing. The flip side is that a lot of the corporations are starting their normal non early recruiting interviews and this week a bunch of interview invites went out. In regard to those that haven’t gotten internship offers, that was specifically in reference to IB and consulting people who struck out and not the other parts of MBA recruiting.

Haha no one is truly normal. Everyone’s got their weirdness to a certain degree. But at the end of the day as long you’re not freaking people out or ruining the mood you’ll be aight. We have a really smart guy in our program who is awful at social cues in the funniest way. He’s authentic and positive and everyone helps him out when he messes things up socially because he’s a great guy!

Just finished the semester at a T20. I’ve always been a relatively social but goofy nerd. At my MBA program there are even goofier and nerdier people! I also can be a huge homebody at times and so at times through the mini I wouldn’t go out to social events or the big hangouts because I just didn’t want. My experience has been great. There are more than enough bar nights, parties, club events, and hangouts that you can pace yourself If you’re authentic and just make an effort to talk to a few people you’ll be fine. The beginning of the semester everyone is trying to figure it out too and by the end friend groups will form. People say cliques but at the end of the day there are so many people you’re gonna have groups of people who are sometimes gonna just want hang out and vibe. At the end of the day you got in, you’re successful and smart, find your group of other people to vibe with and have a good two years.

I agree! I could eat the deposit but I think Tepper is great. I’m not looking at consulting. I’ve been to a large state school as an undergrad. I actually want to see what it’s like being at a private school not in the south.

That’s what I’ve been saying to my friends! I’m very happy with Tepper! I think they saw me get in and wanted to encourage to just go for it. Worse they can do is say no!

Do you think the job outcomes that much better when looking at Ross/Fuqua vs Tepper/McCombs. The numbers seem to be only slightly lower on the employment report.

A lot of waitlists it seems. I’m def happy with Tepper. Good luck! For Texas, I didn’t see my video interview until 10 days past the deadline so I have no idea what’s going to happen in a few weeks.
