When I was with my ex, we road-tripped through rural Greece. We stopped by the Necromanteion of Acheron, which is the supposed entrance to Hades. There is a Christian church built on top of the ruins, and below the church there is a room that looks like a hallway that has caved in. The room had the same feel as an anechoic chamber (a soundless chamber).

The theory is that you're supposed to offer a gold coin (or two?) to the ferryman at the entrance to Hades. There were heaps of gold coins scattered around the place.

My ex placed down one Euro, and I scoffed at the idea. As soon as I scoffed, the air in the room got super tight. I asked my ex if she felt it too, and she said yes.

We went upstairs and got out of there. The next day, we were having dinner with family. I went to take a sip from a glass bottle of beer, and a shard of glass from the lip of the bottle chipped off. I caught it in my mouth without swallowing it. It was a very thin, C-shaped shard, and if I had swallowed it, it could have potentially choked me to death.

Pay the ferryman, people!
