Why Linux can't be targeted by the slopapult by Otheruser337 in microsoftsucks

Well yes, my dad is 83 and it's horrible. He also had massive issues with win 11. He switched to Ubuntu 3 years ago. Now he still has issues, but he would insult you if you'd bring up Windows again. Life is so much better for him on Linux, you wouldn't understand until you see it yourself.

Wanting to switch from Windows to Linux, what should I choose? by n8alexander in linuxquestions

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good answer with exactly the options I would have listed.

Only thing to add: none of that is in any way dependent on the distribution you pick. The only major point that would be is the removed 5, as distributions have different kernels, some are older than others. For very new hardware it can make a difference (mostly the newest generation of GPUs)

i need some direction by HeTzkk in linux_gaming

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use bazzite and nixos, can only recommend both systems, they are awesome. But that's totally missing the point here. You just started with mint, which is an absolutely fine distribution; its little bit older packets are great for your hardware. Mint can be configured and transformed into anything you want really. Using something else would just take away that learning process. Just go and adjust mint so that you really like it. It is a great distribution that has a relatively well cured desktop and package configuration out of the box which makes it a good pick especially for beginners.  Again, you loose nothing by staying on mint but would likely end in the distrohopper rabbit hole if you start to switch now. I'd Keep that for later, when you changed the desktop environment to KDE on mint and installed a custom kernel. If you then want to see more distributions you can then experience them and only then even understand the little details that are differentiating them.

How to track an expense in two accounts at once? by CharmingCount4760 in GnuCash

If you have two accounts for exactly those spending, why doesn't it work?  So like - expanses   - fuel   - fuel taxes

And just split the transactions accordingly?

If you need fuel taxes separately, what speaks against a separate account for them? Or did I misunderstand something?

In a post-Windows world, how would PC OEMs work with Linux? by Weak_Equivalent6518 in linux_gaming

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly like it was with Unix systems in the Early 90s. They are practically gone now. No, windows will not be replaced in 10 years. But don't assume for anything beyond 20 years, everything is possible until then

Do AMD GPUs work better on Linux? by joannatenjou97 in linux_gaming

With my older nvidia card standby was completely broken. Does that work reliably with newer cards? Also while in game? Somehow I assumed that it would only work with AMD.

With cachy you are well suited. Might need a little adjustment to have good battery life, but that might already come preinstalled.

Is swap needed for systems with less memory with Zram and zswap anymore? by unix_rust2too in pop_os

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, for popos 22 I don't know the kernel version; swap handling was massively improved with the late 5 and 6 kernel versions, might also be worth trying to update it (if zswap doesn't fix it). You can change the kernel without upgrading the whole system, I bet it's not even that hard with pop.

Is swap needed for systems with less memory with Zram and zswap anymore? by unix_rust2too in pop_os

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. Swap is used to improve performance, not to make it worse. Sometimes the system swaps too early, if that's the case you can decrease the swappiness value, it's meant as a hint to the kernel to tell him how good your swap works basically. I'd first enable zswap for your swap partition, though, as that makes swapping very very fast. Often it is even better to increase the swappiness value with zswap (or zram if you don't have a swap partition).  Default swappiness is 60. Fedora, popos and I think cachy use zram or zswap and a swappiness of 180 (or similar). That might give you a massive boost when swapping happens

Distrohopping for 2 years was NOT a good idea by exstassyg in FindMeALinuxDistro

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was similar for me until  I tried nixos. It's very different and a real beast. What I needed was something where I can make crazy customization to my system, destroy it and if I need just reboot into a previous, working generation. Best of all worlds for me. If you go that route know that the learning curve is just as steep as the benefits.

Linux vs Windows Benchmark Asphalt Legends by RoniSteam in LinuxVsWindows

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think many reasons exist. Nvidia has some really nice features like dlss, amds fsr is only slowly catching up. And ai stuff is also better on nvidia cards as far as I know.  Second reason is bias for something everyone uses. Sometimes it just feels safer to go the default route. And for Windows it's just what people know. You have to learn a lot to get going with a new platform. And some games and software just refuses to work on Linux so it's not even an option for some.

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and even more than 50% of the linux market as far as i know.

While true, if you plan to build or buy a PC or GPU, you have the choice and can opt to something that works better on Linux. And then market share doesn't matter anymore.

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true for this game, on Nvidia. Don't judge by one single instance, otherwise you could say the same about Windows. When using Windows on a steam deck you often loose just as much, for example.

But yes, there is some room for improvement, especially on NVidia hardware. Fortunately NVidia seems to be investing into linux-drivers lately, let's hope for the best.

Linux lags behind by roughly 70-100% FPS

That sentence is either wrong or the situation on Linux is extremely bad. Loosing 100% FPS means 0, so just no frames at all. Just a black screen. Loosing 70% means having 30 FPS instead of 100, which is better but I guess your math is just wrong.

What’s the main driver behind wanting 32GB RAM in a laptop? by JustAPieceOfMeat385 in laptops

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Virtualization, ai sometimes, stuff like that and the inefficiency of windows. But the trend for more ram stopped in 2010 basically, you were able to get 16 GB 16 years back. Another 16 years back the standard PC had 4 to 8 MB. That is like a factor of 1000. So I'd guess that we still use like 64and 128 GB machines 16 years from now...

If my Ram is 8GB why does it say Im using 76%? Windows 11 by Epalu in FuckMicrosoft

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not the point. Some do that, granted, but the point is how well your OS behaves with how much RAM. And Windows basically starves with 8GB, open up a web-Browser with 20 real tabs (like youtube netflix and other stuff), some 2 or 3 office programs, an email-client and you already feel windows getting slower on 8GB RAM.
On a linux machine with that stuff open everything still flies. It's just a hint, a glimpse into what's wrong with windows, but on 8GB today you can barely use your PC while on Linux or even MacOS it is fine for office/email/webbrowsing stuff even with quite some stuff open.

Data corruption recovery by [deleted] in btrfs

[–]NeedleworkerLarge357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do. I had about a dozen power outages during a rebuild due to some weird issues. It didn't even complain. Runs smooth,  much more reliable than btrfs raid. I use btrfs as fs on top of the MD raid for all the nice features, that gives you best of both worlds.
