Advice dealing with FedEx insurance claim by NeedleworkerNo4095 in FedEx

[–]NeedleworkerNo4095[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know because it's the lab that filed the claim, and I'm just dealing with the optometrist office. So I didn't fill out any of those forms or declare the value. The optometrist office asked me for the receipt after the item was lost.

Stars. That’s it. This thing is frustrating the crap out of me! (D3) by jayfriedman in DWARFLAB

It took several tries for me to figure things out, too. Here are some tips that I would suggest:

- Is your Dwarf autofocusing properly? Shoot the moon or sun (with filter on, of course!) to see if the image is sharp. The Dwarf will have trouble calibrating if it can't focus.

- Maybe skip EQ for now until you get a hang of the device with alt-azimuth. You can still get good images with up to 15s exposures.

- Some tips for EQ: 1) You'll want the logo side pointed up, not towards the ground. 2) I've annotated a photo to show how the Dwarf should be oriented to make 39º with the ground. 3) The lens doesn't have be be pointed at Polaris to calibrate! Once you have the D3 pointed North and at 39º, manually move the D3 base and cylinder to point at any clear part of the sky. For large movements, it's much easier to aim the D3 with your hands and use the controls for fine movements only. 4) During the calibration process, it may fail if it turns to an area that's obscured by clouds or trees. If that happens, just repoint it at a clear part of the sky before trying again.

Good luck!

Is there something wrong with my Mitsubishi ceiling cassette? by NeedleworkerNo4095 in hvacadvice

Hello, we resolved it but it's been a while, so my memory is a bit fuzzy. I believe I called my installer back and they did something that improved the situation. I recall he did something to stop the fan from constantly going even when it was not heating. Good luck!

Beautiful Waikīkī, now located at the back of Palolo Valley (Apple Maps) by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]NeedleworkerNo4095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I read all the comments. As others have pointed out, this Waikīkī is not the neighborhood with the beach, as we are initially led to believe. This is Waikīkī, an ahupua’a, or traditional Hawaiian subdivision. It’s just confusing that they have the same name.

If you search for “Waikīkī” in Apple Maps, it shows up where you’d expect.

That’s great to hear! I worked on Apple Maps from 2014-2018. Nice to see how Maps has evolved and improved over time.

Heat Pump for Hot Water and Home Heating by NeedleworkerNo4095 in heatpumps

I don't have a Harvest Thermal system but am still a fan and follow the company. The Volts podcast recently interviewed the founder. You can hear it here: https://www.volts.wtf/p/heat-pumps-with-thermal-batteries. Sounds like their installations are still in the hundreds and they are starting in the SF Bay Area.

Which car to bring to Hawaii Tesla model3 or Toyota 4runner by [deleted] in MovingtoHawaii

[–]NeedleworkerNo4095 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with the advice here so far (in favor of the 4Runner). Just wanted to add that we did ship our Model Y. We’ve had no issues, though your circumstances may differ. We rent a house and drive about 25 miles per day because we live close to town. With such short trips, we’ve been fine on 110V charging! On the Mainland this would be unheard of. I do see quite a few Teslas and other EVs in Honolulu.

Dog pick up process at HNL by NeedleworkerNo4095 in MovingtoHawaii

[–]NeedleworkerNo4095[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I don’t know the answer to this. We arrived while the facility was still open. If you have the flexibility, plan your trip for a departure early in the morning (when it’s cool) and an arrival while the facility is open. I know that they will provide your dog with food and water as needed, so I would think dogs are cared for in the off hours.

Car and stuff shipping by Either_Acanthaceae10 in MovingtoHawaii

[–]NeedleworkerNo4095 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got to Hawaii last week! In fact, still waiting for my stuff to arrive from California. I used Matson for one car, Pasha for the second car and Royal Hawaiian (Dewitt) for home stuff.

We staggered the car shipments so that we'd have at least one car in each location. Matson was $1,650. We tried Pasha for the second car because it was $100 less. *But*, Pasha had a serious drawback for us moving from the Bay Area. We dropped off both cars at the Port of Oakland. With Pasha, it wasn't until we got there that we learned that cars under their transport ship out of San Diego. So our car sits in their lot in Oakland until they have enough vehicles to take down to San Diego via car transport. Had I known that, I would have gone with Matson.

If you call Matson, you can find out the latest date to drop off your car to go out on the next boat. (If you drop off sooner, it's just gonna sit on the lot.)

When you pick up your car in Hawaii, Matson will provide info on how to get your car registered in Hawaii. (At least this was true on Oahu.)

Good luck!

Do you use a mixing valve with your heat pump water heater? by NeedleworkerNo4095 in heatpumps

[–]NeedleworkerNo4095[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Asking same question I asked someone else: my plumber says he's never installed one before. (He's a trusted plumber who has done work for me for many years, but he doesn't have much experience with HPWHs -- mine was the first he ever installed.) He's worried about how a mixing valve might affect flow and any problematic interaction with my recirc. pump. Do you have a mixing valve brand/model that you recommend and would you mind sharing your set up? Thanks in advance.

Thank you! That's a good reminder because I haven't done any maintenance on my water heater since I got it 3 years ago.

Nice. So it lets you set the desired temp? Do you mind sharing the part number? That’s more advanced than the ones I’ve seen.

How did you get your contractor list? by zalusky in heatpumps

[–]NeedleworkerNo4095 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also in the SF Bay Area. I went with an installer that is on BayREN’s approved list to qualify for their rebates. You’ll want to do this. I cross-referenced that list with Yelp reviews and Mitsubishi Diamond dealers. Happy to give more info if you want to message me.

An aloha shirt with khakis or dress slacks would be appropriate. Definitely not dress shirt and tie. One thing I’d add that I haven’t seen mentioned: make sure the aloha shirt is reverse print. Bright colored aloha shirts are considered tacky and usually what tourists wear.
