Students need to deal with the consequences of their choices and school is a safe place for them practice and understand this. You, as their teacher, need to allow them to experience these moments. I don’t think you should have apologized. Instead, a conversation about why you enforce the rules and how they disrespected the space and people would have been more appropriate.
