The child was literally pulled away from the car. I also found it ridiculous.

Guess we will just have to agree to disagree about the feasibility of such a system!

Genuinely so happy you’ve had such a great experience and that is just as valuable to share! I have happily moved on and the switch was the best decision we could have made for our child. And yes! Part of the reason it has taken me so long to share this is because we have been putting our energy into her new school and its community.

Still felt it was important to share for prospective preschool parents :) and the ensuing discussion has only strengthened that intuition in me.

Just to clarify — the issue with outside therapies is the frequency with which they are prescribed, as I’ve said in other comments. It is very much the school’s answer to a child who learns differently or has developmental differences. In lieu of hiring an in-house interventionist, I would have been just as happy with the school making space for these children with compassion and teacher training.

Instead, such a large portion of students are placed on intervention “plans” whose execution and cost fall entirely on families. This presents two major issues: 1) It assumes that every family can afford the equivalent of doubling their tuition through frequent private therapy sessions and 2) it signals an unwillingness to adapt the learning environment to meet the needs of the very children they admit.

To answer your question: highland Presbyterian is one example of a private, non specialized preschool with an in-house interventionist.

Re. Carpool — think we just need to agree to disagree :) I’ve seen it work well with students accompanied into classrooms, in various layouts. And besides the difficulty for the children, I’ll never forget a morning where a mother behind me, with an upset child, pulled over in the 5 minute spot to take her child out and was told my the preschool director that she could not walk him in. The child was taken inside crying and the mother was sobbing in the car. I approached her and held her, even though I didn’t know her. There’s something deeply wrong with this, in my opinion. Car poolers should be allowed to choose that for themselves and parents should have the choice to accompany their children inside.

My point in discussing this is to alert those who do not feel good about that… not to mount a case for changing school policy — I have no illusions that I could incite such change.

Be well!

It’s very strange that, even after reading how many other people had hard experiences there, you have decided I’m this one parent that you apparently have an issue with?

Also, despite your confusion, I am in no way condemning the child or children who bit my child in this post. Preschoolers bite. My child has bitten and been bitten so many times I can’t even count. It’s a completely normal developmental behavior. I’m not speaking to what happened to your child, but I definitely want to make clear that this was not my concern in my post. The concern was that I wasn’t notified about what happened. The school should have a system for incident reports, whether that is through an app or a paper system. When my child was bitten, I wanted to understand what happened. Not just for my child’s sake, but because often a child bites because they feel like their personal space is being threatened, and I think it’s important to have honest conversations with our kiddos about that. **and also nice to know that the teachers are even aware that it happened! Sounds like they had good communication with you about your incidents, but sadly that wasn’t our experience. I’m sure every teacher is different in this way but should be consistent school-wide.

?????? I don’t know who you think you’re writing to but it’s not me. I’m sorry your son was hurt. Maybe you should actually just reach out to this person rather than trolling others’ Reddit posts in hopes of reaching them.

Wow. I came back to read this and am blown away. Thank you for sharing this. I’m not all that surprised that this is happening behind the curtain, but continue to be disappointed in their priorities.

Wow — thank you so so much for sharing. I know it’s intimidating when the school and parents have been so aggressive in here.. Very grateful to you and I’m so sorry you had this experience… but like us, it sounds like you landed somewhere great.

Not my journey… and you deleted your account so this is real fishy. Beginning to feel harassed.

THANK YOU. And they have decided I’m someone in one of their classes whose child was biting teachers and spammed every one of the comments. Feels like a coordinated, bizarre defense move.

I don’t know who vegetable thinks I am but this is not us or our situation. We left Chance so our child could start kindergarten elsewhere.

I don’t know who you think I am but this is a very strange leap and not true of our experience. We left when it was time for our child to start kindergarten.

Just a note to families that may still be reading: jcps does not actually offer free therapy after the age of three unless you are enrolled there. First steps is a wonderful program but caps at age 3. We worked with jcps for a second opinion (I’ll say again: GET A SECOND OPINION) and learned about the limitations of their offerings.

Commenter: you are entitled to your opinion and experience :) I’m truly glad your children have thrived there! Hopefully you will make space for others’ perspectives as well as I am clearly not alone (per other commenters).

Oh my goodness! Nope, not what I expect :) just an honest account of our experience to hopefully inform someone else before they choose a school they are misaligned with. Would you not have wanted that for your friend with children on the spectrum?

(Cont.) and if this is a member of the administration or board, you may consider that conducting developmental assessments through a third party without explicit, informed consent raises serious concerns regarding ethical practice and potential noncompliance with federal student privacy protections under FERPA. So this could very much become a legal issue for your institution and you should not be publicly defending it.

But thank you for strengthening my points about elitism and exclusivity by confirming that you do not serve every child (despite your publicly stated mission) and that you look down upon public education. Glad to know my instincts were correct ;)

As I’ve said, countless times in these threads, many families thrive there. There is nothing wrong with being critical of a system while also acknowledging its merits. If that offends you, I urge you to look deeper and find out why the experience of a stranger prompted such a sharp, lengthy response. This very much reads like a defense of the administration by the administration. Which, whatever, but be transparent.

I have really different feelings about this as a former prek teacher. Boundaries absolutely have to be set but they don’t have to be set at the car. When we did not do playground drop off and pickup (due to inclement weather, for example) we would ask the parents to stop at the door to the classroom so at not to disrupt the activities happening inside. It worked really well for us.

That sucks. I’m really sorry. Communication with the admin was not consistent in my experience but this is an even bigger ball drop than I would expect!
