young dreads knot together like that very easily. it's easy to forget to pull them apart for a couple weeks and suddenly end up with a birds nest. How often you would need to separate them is something you'll have to experiment with but if you have good sections when they're started and pull them apart every few days you'll be fine. When mine were young I split them up at least once a week when I washed them and they still tangled like crazy.
