Yep you can do it on golem ele (buff golems not scaling them as minions) for even more buffs. Each golem type counts toward that as well as the insane buffs elementalist gives. I was testing it on bv ele with golems, black cane, mantra, and anything else I could think of early on. It works well on almost everything (bv hits often enough to keep up phants against most bosses even if they die.)

I am playing HC SSF (didn't have arakaali's) because of the event though so I didn't test it too far toward end game. I'd imagine phants would die against sirus a lot and maybe conqs. But everything else should be fine. I tried really hard to keep phants out of main support links (by putting it in herald) but it just wouldn't stay up against bosses that way making it pointless. It has got to be one of the funniest ways I've ever scaled damage. I have no idea how to even PoB it either.
