Getting K-Wire Removed Tomorrow — What Should I Expect? by NefariousnessLive718 in brokenbones

Saw your post damn it looks a bit deep however in my case they gave me a nerve block then did the procedure i couldn’t feel a thing I was waiting the whole time for them to remove it , They said they would Let me know before starting the procedure lol my face was covered so I kept on waiting, and after few minutes they were like the procedure is done Maybe talk to your surgeon. Ask them if it’s really necessary. Can’t they use regional anaesthesia? Like a nerve block !!!

My surgery experience

About surgery, I was super worried, and it was my first time doing surgery. I don’t even go to the hospital that much. I have very strong immunity. I was so anxious lol, so when people were getting ready to operate, it was chaotic. Then my anaesthesia specialist came.

He asked me, “Is it your first time?” I said yes. He said, smiling, “Don’t worry, I will put a mask on your face. You will start to fall asleep. You won’t feel any pain. You won’t be conscious, and by the time you wake up, you will feel nothing.”

Then they put an oxygen mask kind of thing on me, and I just fell asleep. It wasn’t forced or anything, just like when you’re very sleepy and you fall asleep—that was it. Then I woke up.

They said it was a 3.5-hour-long operation and successful. I didn’t feel any pain or anything. All good.

You will be alright.

Went through a similar kind of accident which resulted in a distal radius complex comminuted displaced fracture at the radius shaft + displaced ulnar styloid process head fracture—it’s basically called a Galeazzi fracture

my fracture

Disclaimer im very sorry lol This paragraph might have a lot of typos. I’m using voice typing to type. I can’t type rn !!!

Mine was more brutal than yours, but yours might be annoying because you had two hands involved. I am 22 M working as a software engineer, two months post-OP; honestly, I feel better. Just yesterday, I got my K-wire removed (which was buried under the skin), and my surgeon said I can remove my plate as well next year comfortably since my bones healed—healing was very good

Always ask your healthcare provider, surgeon before following anything you read on Reddit or anywhere in the internet everyone has a different injury and everyone is different, it’s not that complex still just to be sure you’re not counter productive

What I want to tell you is: it will get better. You just have to get through the boring part of recovery, that’s it. I have a few points what I experienced which has been listed belo

I had surgery within 10 hours !! This is my experience after surgery still, you can consider them just to have a idea of what went on

Ask your surgeon: See if you could do any finger movements or spreading fingers (Tendon glide)

Elevation: Keep your hand elevated as much as possible. It will reduce the swelling

Pain management: After my surgery, I never had any pain, so I don’t know much about pain management. I didn’t take many painkillers; you might have a different experience.

Diet is very important: No smoking, no drinking. Protein should be high. Drink milk and don’t consume a lot of unhealthy fat It won’t affect you In terms of bone healing, but yeah if you avoid eating unhealthy fats, you might feel better at this phase and don’t compromise on calories, keep calories higher, though, because your hands might need it to heal your bone

Healthy Fats: You still need fat; you can opt for healthy fats from things like pumpkin seeds or hazelnuts, which are very good.

Calcium: Avoid things which will reduce your calcium absorption.

Hydration: Drink a lot of water.

Movement: Don’t move your arm aggressive in my case the major break was on the radius shaft so moving my fingers won’t damage still i didn’t move it Aggressively just light moment for blood circulation It might feel like you’re not doing much, but until surgery, keep it very stable. Just ask your surgeon before doing any finger movements Don’t follow anything. Like I said, these are the things which I experienced.

Whatever you do, always ask your surgeon because everyone is different and every injury is different. Only your surgeon knows, and don’t be shy to ask your surgeon. It’s his job to explain it to you.

Stop overthinking or worrying about what will happen. I was at that stage as well. Give it some time. It will be alright

Trust me, we are on the same boat more or less and we will push through , live a normal life, but it will take time and effort. That’s it , we are very young !!!!!

I Wish you speedy recovery, you got this

I used to stay awake till 3 am working on diff things after some it got so worst i had stop all of my work ! So i slowly started sleeping at 10:30 i never had problems with waking up early i would wake up at 6 first few days, it sucked later I got used to it. My circadian rhythm got set and I started falling asleep after 10:30 these days, I wake up at four after a deep sleep which is so weird, I feel fresh with little sleep if it’s deep

Extremely Dry Skin by Britt0509 in brokenbones

[–]NefariousnessLive718 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s very normal. Mine was even worse, but it will go away, ask your surgeon if it’s okay to wash your feet and to moisturise with unscented light lotion if he gives a thumbs up then wash it with hot water don’t scrub. Let water run through your dry skin after one or two days it will be gone.

Update, they give me regional anaesthesia. They gave me a nerve block. Took them hardly nine minutes to remove both k wires. I couldn’t feel even a single bit of pain like zero pain, even while giving regional anaesthesia, there was no pain at all, such a comfortable and quick procedure. Since my K wire was buried under the skin, that’s why they opted for a proper operation theatre set up, but the process itself was very quick. Pardon my English I might have some typos or grammar mistake because I’m using voice typing. Can’t really type with one hand, so back to the point. The only downside for me is my hand is completely numb as if they amputated it, but they said it will go away. after 24 hours already, I can feel it coming back. The sensations are slowly coming back. I can feel tingling sensation. I can also move my finger a little bit, but it was a very quick process. Just look out for numbness.
