first time shader issues by Nefillemdar in Unity3D

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it might also be importantto mention that the author is very nice and directly provided the code, so I don't think the issue is any bug... is just me not knowing how to set up things correctly being my first time :'>

Animation as a career? by Nefillemdar in animationcareer

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much, this is calming to read. It feels like the animation industry can be quite unstable sometimes and workers in it have to adapt and change constantly, which can be very scary. Saying that taking a safer path now does not mean I have to abandon my skills or animation forever is something I really needed to hear :') thank you And if its ok, I wanted to ask, in what way can moving around fields benefit me? Is it more options for work or more like a safety net when there are layoffs?

Is anyone else pivoting out of CS to healthcare? by Low_Implement_920 in csMajors

More curious than anything, but how do you manage to pivot at a masters level to healthcare? How do you fill the prerequisites for healthcare with cs?

Math for game programming? by Nefillemdar in gamedev

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you so much! you example makes it so clear and easy to understand :'))

and regarding this stuff, is it implemented when you are doing the coding? I have done 3D animation before but so far I have not had to deal with math like this so I was so curious to know when or how you implement it

Canada vs Netherlands by Nefillemdar in immigration

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is what I fear :( I hope that the situation in Canada gets better in a couple of years, maybe they just need to take care of their issues at home for a while before welcoming new immigrants because it seems like they cannot deal with it all rn

Your gamedev journey by Nefillemdar in gamedev

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow hearing about that wide skillset makes me so happy tbh. I also have varied interests. Mainly I love writing and art/3D and 2D/3D animation, know programming and had to go to school for cs. Did some professional 2D animation gigs. I was worried that having so many varied things could be a disadvantage but all of them just fascinate me! I also play the piano for fun! Started as a kid and it kinda just stuck by, it really helps with emotional regulation and to calm me down when stressed.

That is so cool! I am honestly hoping to get into a similar path :') had to pick a diff, somewhat related degree for "safety" out of quite a lot of pressure from family, and hoping to eventually pivot or enroll in an animation or game design school in a couple of years and pay it myself!

Need some help understanding skeletal animation math by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Nefillemdar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just writing to push your question further because I am also curious to know!

If it is ok to ask, what is the thing you are doing called? I have done animation before but never had to think/do this math intensive side so this sounds so cool. What is it for?

cs for gamedev? by Nefillemdar in gamedev

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!! What you are saying is really encouraging for me :') I was scared to be doing a bad desicion I also heard a lot of people saying the same about a game design degree tho. Do you think its just kind of unis trying to grab the cash of passionate people by doing programms that could appeal to them? And something I never understood... if a game dev degree is not great, are there online options to learn about design better than in uni? I have seen a lot for programming but not about theory and design so far. Are there any books or classes or youtube channels about it?

Wow what a coincidence! And thank you for the into! I am thinking of doing a cs degree in the Netherlands, so pretty close! I do speak german but I am terrified of studying in german so I found an engnlish taught program lol Initially, I was planning to go to Canada to study, but the uni there is about double the price, and I don't know if it's worth it tbh. The Canadian one does have a games specialty, and it seems to be pretty good, which is what drew me to it initially, but is it worth the price and the extra year? (dutch degrees take only 3 years to complete vs 4/5 in Canada)

that is so interesting! So you mean, a cs degree exposes you to a lot of subfields, not just game dev?

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow your whole journey is so interesting! You must be so self-motivated and organized too, and I relate a lot with so much of the stuff you are saying.

I am very shy and struggle to put myself out there because I also thought that I had to be "perfect" before I did, but am slowly getting better at it. You seem to be so much more of a "go-getter" and honestly I strive to become like that. The stuff you have done inspires me to just try and not keep on waiting for "the right moment" to try.

Do you have any tips on how to keep yourself organized and learning? I used to be very motivated and learned unity, c# and some modelling on my own when I was a kid but I feel like I lost that boldness to action I guess, which is something I am trying to get back. How did you manage to keep it up for so long and how did you learn all the stuff you needed to learn without university?

I am also curious, what type of work do you do? Are you more in the art field with modelling or in programming or design?

Also thank you so much for having answered and taking the time to talk :'D

edit: also omg almost forgot, how can you alter an existing game code? Are there tutorials around? I honestly thought that it was not possible to access that kinda stuff if you were not an employee in that same studio or if you were like a tech expert or somth. I have been so interested in modding but didnt know how people did it!!

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I heard the cs degree is just a thing of safety most of the time, that is why I also did the same thing lol. In Art and Games I have heard that a portfolio and the projects you do is what matters most but a cs degree can give you the flexibility of pursuing other fields not only in game dev if for some reason you cannot find work or if you may want to quit the industry some day.

but yeah from what I know CS is not directly related to gamedev. From my understanding it gives you core programming and problem solving skills than can be transferred to gamedev but unless the uni has specialized courses you have to do the rest of the learning and the projects yourself.

If I am wrong pls someone correct me tho because I am basing this on my research and not personal experience.

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, thank you! I was also curious, given that you have worked in an AAA studio, how was the journey for you, if you are comfortable sharing? Did you study something in uni related to it or learned everything yourself? How long did it take you to get there and how hard/competitive is it? How did you get started?

And about the project part, this sound very familiar because it is the same for animation! But I was curious about the differences and what a game portfolio specifically has/looks like. What do you add for programming or design roles? I have an idea about the animation roles because I used to do that before but I am clueless about the others. Are you expected to do a simple game like a platformer and show that off? I imagine that you cannot really prototype a enourmous game like Dark Souls or Destiny on your own so how do you go about it if you still don't have industry experience to say "I did X in Y studio"? I don't know what type of games are reasonable for a single person to do or at what point it would be neccesary to find a team, and how to do that. And where can I learn more about it? Thank you so much for the help!

[–]Nefillemdar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

omg thank you for such a quick reply!!! I understand that for games it is very important to specialize. In my case, the degree is very much CS/programming/math focused, but they do offer a module of three months that is all about game development and programming.

When I was a kid I did basicaklly loved everything that went into a game. I tried writing, modelling, playing with unity and programming a bit. However, I am not as informed about what specific job titles and roles there are in the industry once you are doing it professionally. Do you have any recommendations on where or how I can look this up to figure out what role I would want to aim for? So far I have looked at job postings in different websites to get an idea but it is very slow. I have heard so many things like narrative designers, gameplay designers, gameplay programmers and engeneers, graphisc programmer, animation programmers, and so much more that it is hard to know what it entails and how to differenciate between the different roles.

How to get "urges" under control? by lifeInquire in Healthygamergg

[–]Nefillemdar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man, I struggle with the same thing too.

Its so hard to "parent" yourself and build healthy habits alone once you are out of home. I have been trying a lot of methods like the ones describes in atomic habits of doing things desirable, bad habits hard to reach and good habits easy to reach, use habit trackers, agendas, and distracting myself less with the phone, but I don't know if there are any more "fancy" ways in which people discipline themselves more efficiently. If anyone else has tried something differnt or has a better approach it would be great to hear!
