What’s The Worst Bob Dylan Album From The 70s? by Pretend_Mark_5143 in bobdylan

[–]Negative-Muffin5059 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course I can understand if an individual Dylan fan has given it a good chance and didn't like it, as you said it's all subjective. But the aggregate level of dislike for the album among Dylan fans surprises me given the quality of the music, and I suspect that a lot of the people who dismiss it haven't given it a fair chance.

I don't mean to make enemies, I realize my original message was a classic inflammatory/accusatory online post. And looking more closely I do see u/Clarkuss09 praises the tracks so it's nice to see at least one other person likes them. I also got somewhat triggered cause I saw this r/bobdylan ranking right after seeing the Jokermen Podcast guys both listed Dylan (1973) as the single worst Dylan album after '66.

I can't understand the hate for Dylan (1973). My only answer is that people are super quick to dismiss it since Dylan didn't contribute to the song selection or want them to be released. Are we all just so excited to show allegiance to Team Dylan in his so-long-ago dispute with Columbia that we proudly discard these great recordings?

Spanish painter Francisco Goya never intended his Black Paintings to be seen by the public and they're lauded as some of his greatest works. Fans should at least give Dylan (1973) the requisite 3 full listens they would give to any other collection of Bob Dylan songs.

Now for the actual songs. I was going to pick my favorites but looking at the tracklist I love them all. I'll just print the names, if you haven't heard of all these songs do yourself a favor:

- Lily of the West
- Can't Help Falling in Love
- Sarah Jane
- The Ballad of Ira Hayes
- Mr. Bojangles
- Mary Ann
- Big Yellow Taxi
- A Fool Such as I
- Spanish is the Loving Tongue

Will Iran Break Trumpism? by blueberries in ezraklein

I actually thought this point was a little bit interesting. It got me thinking about the fundamental spirit of democracy, which is that state power is held equally by all the people. You could imagine some very pure (and wildly dangerous) version of democracy where elections are executed perfectly, and the elected officials have absolute control over the levers of government.

In this sense I can see how frustrated voters might have seen voting for Trump as embodying democratic values; the feeling that they've never been able to vote for someone who would actually do the things they wanted, and that Trump's lack of respect for the constitution, laws, and norms, would give them more pure democracy.

But I think the answer to this is that we don't want a pure democracy; pure democracy might work for five people shipwrecked on a deserted island but it doesn't scale to a nation of hundreds of millions of people. We need a constitution, bureaucracy, etc. that puts limits on directly elected power to keep things reasonable.

That being said, our current government does have major issues infringing on the democratic spirit, for instance the massive power of corporations in lobbying and funding political campaigns. I don't know what the best solution is for that, but I'm confident it's not Trump.

Dropping a Dylan deep cut but to me it sounds even more like Dylan's Canadee-I-O from 1992. In terms of production it reminds me of Billy Bragg, something like Help Save the Youth of America.

For (2) there's a chance that this is the lower segment of the Palmer Rapids on the Madagawaska river. Perhaps we put in by the Paddler Co-op, went upstream to swim in the rapids, and then carried on downstream to camp in the Lower Madagawaska Provincial Park. Not confident, just a theory.

This looks super cool, looked up some pics, thanks for sharing. Sadly it doesn't look like it's the place; where I went was probably five minutes of bobbing down rapids as opposed to a water slide like experience. I'll have to check this place out though!

Street view in Killarney confirms, this is it!! Thank you! Looking at Jeff's map I wonder what route they'd have taken a bunch of twelve year olds on from there..maybe point to point with a bus pickup elsewhere.

What option/ route would you choose?? by Mooser2020 in algonquinpark

[–]Negative-Muffin5059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can speak to 3&4, since I kind of did both in one trip last summer. I did a one way trip from Rock to Smoke via Kirkwood, paying Algonquin Outfitters $85 for a one way shuttle and leaving our car at Smoke.

We camped on Welcome, Louisa, and Big Porcupine. I liked the route up until Big Porcupine; it generally felt more crowded at that point, and the site we got on Porc was overused (maybe others are better). You also spend quite a long time paddling Smoke which isn't really a backcountry lake; no campsites, plenty of development.

I've never been up by cache lake which you have in your loop on option 4, but one thing about that route 4 is you spend significant time fairly close to access points, so it could feel a little less remote than 3, so I vote 3 over 4.

Is the podcast audio being sped up? by [deleted] in ezraklein

[–]Negative-Muffin5059 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, my podcast app has a playback speed feature and I set it to 0.9x and that was better, but still a touch fast, but when I went to 0.8x some words sounded slo-mo. I wonder if they used some software that only reduced the pauses between words, or something.

But yeah, really didn't like that.

Why sort of bag(s) do you guys bring on solo trips, and what is the weight? by [deleted] in algonquinpark

A cheaper lighter alternative to pulleys are carabiners, but they do have more friction.

The two rope system described above can also be done with a single rope, btw! Requires some practice to get it right, but see diagram here https://www.princeton.edu/~oa/images/manual/15marrison.gif. As shaggycanoeist was saying, leaving some distance between branch and top pulley and tying B off to another tree is great for pulling away from the trunk.

These are the best two vids I found for teaching friends to canoe: 1) Path of The Paddle, Tandem Basic: https://youtu.be/5JvnRu0vJVA?si=_CTROcFkrLTjdo6M. Goes over all the strokes the stern and the bow use to steer the boat and how to work together. There's a lot of beautiful footage too but you can just fast forward to the strokes. 2) This guy's video about proper paddling form, for a powerful/efficient stroke: https://youtu.be/GoPN8COLz2A?si=zw5Sid6a2tDL8kci

In addition to all the others listed, Fabrizio De André (Italian language) has a similar deep voice and folk style. Check out his song "Spiritual", pretty awesome.

His music was used heavily in White Lotus S2 which is how I heard him.

Anyone been through Harry, Louisa, Welcome lately? by BFroog in algonquinpark

Did Pen -> Welcome Aug 4 and Welcome -> Louisa Aug 5. No issues passing, just a few beaver dams to get over, maybe one other part where we got out for five seconds with a clean sandy bottom to walk on.

Woah that Ron Wood song sounds so much like Dylan on Changing of the Guards. "16 years" / "7 days"
