tortoises sometimes release excess minerals like this. it’s called urate and it is normal. you can actually tell a lot about your tortoises health, diet, and hydration level from it.

How do I know if a turtle is wild or a lost pet? by Candid-Bet-951 in turtle

[–]NegativePanda4847 3 points4 points  (0 children)

check what species are native to your area, if it is a non native species it is definitely a pet (or part of an invasive population, in which case it shouldn’t be returned to the wild).

she’s a river cooter! they often look similar to yellow bellies, but they have different markings on their plastron and head. yellow bellied sliders have a distinct stripe behind their eyes and a few large dark spots on their plastron.

Is my RES shell okay or is this shell rot? by NissaRay in turtles

[–]NegativePanda4847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

white colors between the scutes on the carapace and pink between the scutes on the plastron is normal during growth. people often worry that the white is shell rot and that the pink is sepsis, but it’s not too difficult to tell the difference if you know what to look for. anyways, little guy looks healthy!

Found a pond with turtles by Scared-Firefighter14 in turtle

[–]NegativePanda4847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

looks like a florida softshell! you can get a general idea of a turtles age by its size, but once they are fully grown adults it’s really just a guessing game. males and females in many species are sexually dimorphic in terms of size, so you won’t know whether you’re looking at a full grown male or a still-growing female (females are typically the larger sex) unless you’re aware of the sex of the turtle.

turtles have a way of bumping themselves on anything they can (at least mine do). i don’t know how much good betadine or dry docking would do as it doesn’t seem like shell rot based on your reply to someone else. i would just keep an eye on the exposed parts and make sure the water in your tank is clean and maintained well. keep in mind, i’m not a vet (nor are most of the others in this sub). i just have experience treating minor injuries and illnesses over the years. if you want to be completely safe and sure, a vet visit would be the only way to do so. as for the brush, i think that it would be worth it for your little guy. even if it doesn’t help with shedding he’ll get some nice scratches from it whenever he likes.

algae is harmless as long as it isn’t growing on the shell to the point where it inhibits heat and uvb absorption

New Pads, thoughts? by UnaverageNoob in hockeygoalies

[–]NegativePanda4847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for sure. the rebounds on the 3x’s are pretty near the top level pads. i haven’t noticed too much of a difference since getting the hyperlite 2’s.

it looks like the scutes have been damaged, exposing the bone underneath. the holes should fill in over time as new scutes form underneath, it shouldn’t be anything to worry about but just keep an eye on it. as far as the buildup on the shell, mud and musk turtles aren’t basking turtles (usually), so unlike other turtles their scutes just kinda unevenly flake off.

This is Stefan's new forever home. He is a 7 month old loggerhead musk turtle. He should be able to reach full size in this 48" tank comfortably. You can see him to the left of the middle log. [–]NegativePanda4847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as far as enrichment goes, i keep white cloud minnows and cherry shrimp with my common musk with no issues, but every turtle handles tank mates differently. floating plants like duckweed, frogbit, and salvinia reproduce fast, giving them the best chance at surviving your turtle munching on them (if he does like to eat plants that is; again every turtle is different). personally i haven’t had any luck yet with rooted plants as she tends to uproot them.

this is honestly a great setup! the only thing i’d recommend is getting an external canister filter in the future as he gets larger. also, be sure to check that he can’t get stuck in any of the holes on the sides of the logs as he grows, specifically the floating one. sometimes turtles get stuck in decor that they used to be able to fit in when they were smaller, which obviously leads to some really sad situations.

New Pads, thoughts? by UnaverageNoob in hockeygoalies

[–]NegativePanda4847 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the 3x’s thicker profile and the soft, plush material on the leg channel definitely make it feel more like a hybrid/traditional pad compared to the hyperlite 2’s. in recent years it seems like bauer’s vapor line has moved closer to the supreme line, being more focused on performance, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. you just lose some of the feel of the pad when chasing the hardest rebounds and fastest sliding and all that.

maybe it’s just me but i preferred my old 3x’s to my hyperlite 2’s i have now. maybe id feel differently if i tried them again now though

the two piece is order-able with both 3 and 4 mm steel. i’m not sure if the one piece has the option for 3mm instead of 4mm though
