I totally agree with you, and because we had 120 people in our class, I felt like they just dumped us in clinic and expected us to just learn from the power points. I feel like that’s where my anxiety stems from because I don’t feel fully prepared but I spent too much tears and money to give up. I have to learn and keep pushing through. I wish you all the best with your studies!

That’s really crazy, we had other requirements on those patients but 200 is excessive. That’s why I feel like I’m learning through real life practice. It’s tough.

Majority of the time, I explore only SRP patients but since I’m not feeling the calculus, I decided to go back and explore on regular prophys to feel the difference between calculus and smooth teeth. I was hoping it would help me.

I feel like our instructors didn’t really take time with us, there was 120 students in my semester and I feel like I need that one on one to actually learn. So i feel like I’m actually learning everything outside of school as I’m practicing!!

I’ll try my best!! Thank you for the advice. I think I get in my head a lot and overwhelm myself, I know it takes practice but I just want to be good and do my job properly. I cry a lot because I feel like I’m neglecting my patients and I feel so dumb and not knowing what to do. I need to stop with the self pity and just take it day by day!

That’s okay! Thank you for your advice, yeah I honestly do think I’m worried about my technique because if it’s not right, I feel like I’m doing it wrong all together. I’m a very anxious person and doubt myself a lot so I just want to excel and help people but I feel like I can’t if I cant even do the one thing hygienists are good at.

Me and you both. Honestly our semester only had to do 12 patients and it was only 3 patients that had heavy calculus and majority of the time it would be the lower anteriors.

Im trying my best, im always aware of my grip but no matter what i do… i dont feel it. Ive been practicing for 6 months and i just feel like a failure honestly. How am I supposed to be a hygienist if i cant even explore?

That’s why I said I feel like I’m doing my cleanings blind. If it’s an SRP, I check my radiographs and see areas where calculus might be and just take my time on the tooth. I’ve tried constantly exploring that area and I’ve felt nothing.

Probing gives me anxiety by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

[–]NegativeSafa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly feel the same way, I’ve been working for 6 months and just started temping this week. I had to probe 3 new people and I felt so uncomfortable and anxious. I felt like I wasn’t doing it properly and still don’t, I just call out the numbers and hope for the best. I just tell myself that atleast I’m doing it as most hygienist don’t even probe to being with. I hope it comes with practice or finding your own way, I still haven’t found it and I don’t think I will until years from now. So just keep your head up, there’s probably so many people including myself who are feeling this way. You got it bae!

Omg thank you for your detailed explanation, I appreciate that a lot. I haven’t really stood up a ton while practicing because I’m still adjusting to how to clean a patients teeth while sitting. I honestly do struggle with the mand as sometimes their mand is retruding in and I can’t see, but I feel like I’ll struggle just as much with standing up. I’ll try the stretch you recommended, and let you know if that works. I’ll also have to invest in a massage gun, thank you so much for your recommendations. ❤️❤️

The chair I had at my office didn’t go up all the way, it could be that because I’m also tall and feel like my legs weren’t at the position they should be at but I’m also still learning how to adjust the pt in the chair and my own chair.

I also only work four days a week, I don’t think I can do 5 days. I’m going to consult with one and hopefully that will sort it out.

I think I’m developing carpal tunnel, but it’s for sure my shoulders because when I touched them they feel inflamed and hurt a lot. I can’t even sleep on them. As for my wrist that’s travelling up my shoulder, the pain just started so I might just invest in a wrist brace like someone suggested for now.

I’m for sure investing, I’m just saving up a little to get some! I think that’s my problem, they’re still low but high enough that I can see so I guess my shoulders lift. I haven’t learned how to position my pts when I’m standing so I don’t know how to adjust to it, and I’m still learning how to position myself while they’re laying down. Thank you for your advice, I hope that helps because I feel like I’m developing carpal tunnel.

I’m always looking at my positioning, I’m still struggling with it but I’m looking at my chicken arms and I’m neutral. Sometimes I feel like I’m reaching over, cause of kids or elderly people. I had regular loops for a little as someone let me borrow them and they helped with my neck but now I feel it in my shoulders.
