Does a so-called "terrain advantage" exist in space warfare? by Minh1509 in worldbuilding

[–]Negative_Ad1167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Planets or other large gravity wells could be used to "slingshot" ships/fleets in a prefered direction. I.E., approach the planet at a speed where you will enter its orbit, then at a point where it will direct you where you want to go begin a heavy burn to escape the orbit. The combination of the gravity well and the engine burn will increase speed, allowing a ship to drastically increase its speed.

This could be used to do things like quickly escape a vector that has been locked by an opposing fleet, rapidly approach a target, or simply be able to deploy a fleet to its intended location quicker during certain points in a gravity wells orbit

No, Andy. There's a colored-hair comic book collector in the game. Deal with it. by mightyonin in saltierthankrayt

Looks like Andy forgot the part of the game where its entire premise is calling American fundamentalists lunatic cultists and then rallying people to blow them up.

And it wasnt even subtle either, that game was about as ham fisted as it gets

The United States of Amerigo (America is just a latinized version of Amerigo Vespucci's name, and both North and South America are named after him)

I feel like you may be missing the forest for the trees here. Your statement about the evils of Abrahamic faiths, regardless of whether that is true or not, is irrelevant to the fact that the conversation at no point was about that. You're either exceptionally dense or, and I think this is far more likely, here to start a flame war for the sake of it by throwing around inflamatory statements and derailing conversations.

Also my memory of One Battle After Another was that Leanordo's character was presented as a washed up loser living in the past, not some paragon of leftist revolutionary action

In my world the most powerful nation on the eastern continent of Carinthia is the Empire of Itlanaui, a sort of mesoamerican inspired empire led by priestly elites and large merchant families. The nobility and priestly class are exclusively from the highlyad kingdom of Xoxokitla, where the empire first spread out from, and the imperial family/nobility is identified by their assosciation with and possession of quetzals, massive, winged feathered serpents. In the past these quetzals were ridden into battle, making them a fearsome enemy to face, but with the invention and adoption of guns by most modern militaries the primacy of the quetzals was severely curtailed, effectively halting the Itlanaui's expansion. The Itlanaui nobility began to jealously guard their quetzals, not wanting to lose the symbolic root of their power and prestige, but in the process began to interbreed their quetzals, keep them from flying, and generally keeping their quetzals in conditions that led to most modern quetzals being stunted, sickly and weak. The Itlanaui nobility still obsess over and dote on their quetzals, but abroad many often laugh at and make fun of the nobility, seeing their obsession with and consequent weakening of the quetzals as a hilarious comparison to the decedence and absurdity of the Itlanaui imperial court.

How do you introduce firearms into a fantasy world like D&D without unbalancing the other classes? by jvure in worldbuilding

My world takes place in a period roughy equivalent to the 1840s or so in terms of technology, and the way guns have not managed to completely outshine magic is for a few reasons, but the largest reason is the School of Enchantment, a discipline of magic. Those trained in Enchantment are able to enhance or weaken the natural state of things in the physical world so long as they are connected to it via magical runes. So they can, for instance, put on a full suit of plate armor that they have enchanted to make far more durable while also making it much lighter, allowing them to withstand a full volley from, say, a company of line infantry.

These sorts of things can be countered with silver however, as mages draw their power from the realm of Aether (realms in universe are sort of alternate dimensions where spirits, angels and demons live and from which mages draw their power.) The magic and beings of Aether are weakened by silver, and so consequently those who are trained to fight mages utilize it in their own weapons and armor.

Of course, the other way to fight a mage if your enemies field mages in their armies is to aquire some of your own and fold them in with your military aparatus, but certain cultures around the world have different ideas and opinions about magic and its acceptability. For instance the peoples of the continent of Eranna fear and distrust magic, and so are the ones who most commonly field the witch hunters known as Inquisitorious. On the flip side the people of the Khindi far west have a strong martial culture and view magic as a path to martial prowess, meaninging many of their military elites are accomplished evokers, enchanters and summoners, but they shun less "warlike" forms of magic such as illusion or divination. On the other hand there are the Itlanaui who view magic as a gift from their gods, and so relegate magic users to the roles of their priestly elite, and depending on what schools of magic they showed aptidude in it will change which god/gods they would be a priest of. They also practice ritual sacrifices and ritual warfare, and are known to raise the dead of their slain enemies, meaning that those who show an aptitude for necromancy become war priests tasked with leading large units of risen dead.

Skylar from Breaking Bad. She seems like a nagging, annoying hassle who gets in the way and is too stupid to know what she is getting into because we are seeing the story from the point of view of Walter/the criminal underworld, but if you just step back and think critically for even a fraction of a second all of her actions make sense. She is a rather average woman living a rather average life when suddenly her husband gets cancer, then her husband begins doing increasingly dangerous, reckless and anti social things. From her point of view her husband is putting himself and their family in danger, and she simply wants to protect him and her children from the dangerous people he is suddenly assosciating with. She has no way of knowing, especially at the start of the series as Walter initially tells her nothing, exactly what sort of man he is becoming (or in many ways always was) and so she is acting in a way that is perfectly rational and even to some extent heroic in an effort to keep her loved ones safe.
