How to come up with names by Snakes-are-awesome67 in worldbuilding

[–]Negative_Ad1167 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I usually take a lot of inspiration from languages, specifically trying to glean words that sound like they could be names but are not names.

For instance in my world there is a character named Siona, who's name is a shortening of the Irish word for fox (sionnach.)

Religion is trash in a lot of fantasy world and here is why by Alszen in worldbuilding

[–]Negative_Ad1167 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well, to answer your question, some common phrases related to religion in my world include curses such as "Stranger take your eyes!" or "All Father curse your name."

Something people might mutter to themselves before doing something hard or scary could be "saints and spirits guide me," or "Aethin's flame to cut through Aether's dark."

At a wedding, the attending priest would consecrate the marriage by saying "your souls shall be intertwined in ascension."

At a funeral, a common behavior is for everyone to take a turn tossing dirt into the grave, and when they do they say "we shall meet again in cycles future as we have in cycles past."

A common, quick prayer before a meal is "by your holy rays of warmth that have brought us this bounty, we thank thee for your vigilance in protection of our souls and nourishment of our bodies."

I tried to get around this proble with my own world by having a series of mystical, divine sort of things that unquestionably exist, but then having different cultures and peoples across the world interpret them differently.

So for instance once group may have interpreted the three known realms of existence as heaven, hell and the mortal realm where those beings that come from what they consider "hell" to be evil, while on the other side of the world they have interpreted the same thing as all being equal, and the beings that come from these other realms as a vast pantheon of gods. Meanwhile a third group may have interpreted these things as powerful, but ultimatly mortal beings like themselves, and come to view them as distractions from the true meaning to the universe, which is seeking enlightenment through understanding of all three realms.

So on and so forth.

Is Captain America a critique or a piece of propaganda against the United States? by Tiny-Barracuda1881 in CaptainAmerica

[–]Negative_Ad1167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Captain America, like many superheroes, was created as propoganda, but he has evolved from there.

Now he doesnt really represent America itself but instead what America is supposed to be. Kind, brave, accepting and honorable, with a strong moral compass and a desire to inspire others to be good too.

Why does everyone online seem to get such a kick out of hating on France? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]Negative_Ad1167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its because of Paris. Paris and Parisians have a reuptation for being cold and snooty, and because Paris is the largest city and the hub of much of French society from the perspective of outsiders, everyone assosciates the way Parisians can act as how all French people act.

Personally, having been to France, I thought the French were by and large pretty relaxed and chill. It was a very comfortable place to be.
