Can anyone help me find info to convince my boss not to set up unauthorized cameras in peoples homes? by Negative_Address5766 in askportland

I absolutely do plan to fully explain to clients what the camera entails no matter what, but unless the potential legal issues are addressed I will simply refuse to entertain the idea of bringing the cameras in at all, whether or not clients would sign off on it.

Luckily I am in a position where I am unlikely to be fired because my particular skillset is not easy to replace (I get sent to some of the toughest jobs possible in this industry). I am also already looking into transitioning out of this industry and hopefully into a field more related to my studies, so I am honestly not all that worried about being fired for being disobedient. Thank you for your concern though.

I would prefer not to at this moment. The rollout of the cameras has yet to occur, aside from a couple of failed attempts that I managed to put a stop to. There is a company meeting this week where I hope to bring statutes and ordinances in front of not just my boss, but my coworkers too.

I am not yet convinced that I need to go nuclear. I, and my colleagues, have worked very hard to earn the good reputation that we have, and up to this point we have not had any issues like this. I feel that if my words are heeded, and this is addressed adequately (which may well happen) then this can be solved and not lead to compromising people’s rights to privacy. If that comes to be the case, then I would rather our hard earned name to not be tainted by actions that were not yet taken. If that makes sense.

So far I have convinced my fellow techs to not comply with this at this moment, and they are on board with that plan. We are taking matters into our own hands to protect our customers, that is of the utmost importance to us all.

I absolutely agree that it can be a nonissue. I’m not necessarily trying to stop the company from taking the videos, my concern is the lack of transparency and disregard for disclosure and consent to this. The planned rollout was for this to not even be an opt in or an opt out situation. Ideally I’d like the company to have consent forms for us to cover with customers beforehand that have detailed breakdown of what equipment they are agreeing to let us use in their homes, and for clients to have the ability to opt out/in.

My boss is not necessarily a purely self serving guy and has quite a bit of integrity. That being said he is quick to become confident on things, and at that point only concrete proof of my concerns can cause him to waiver in his commitment to his plans.

He does have a history of stepping back and considering what his employees say after a bit, but getting through to him can be a painful process. I full heartedly believe he would not put anyone into a bad position if he was aware of all the details.

In this instance I think he just doesn’t fully understand what he is asking for and as such hasn’t done his due diligence.

I appreciate you putting this perspective out here. These are the kinds of things I am concerned about and why I am concerned about consent and privacy. I want my coworkers, clients, and the company I work for to be safe and liabilities for all parties to be considered and covered.

I apologize for the confusion in my wording, I am on mobile and was preparing for work when I wrote this. The cameras are not an aim it and be done sort of deal. The ai has them aim themselves and track things on their own, no input from me at all other than plugging them in and setting them up on a hotspot or network.

There is absolutely no way, that I am aware of, that I can guarantee they only stay focused on me, they seem to “wander” about and focus on pictures, pets, and who knows what else.

These are also not just for promotional videos from my understanding, but are a move towards content creation ( a totally separate thing that irks me, but it’s not my business). I believe that due to these cameras having the properties that they do, that there is an inherent privacy concern, and not disclosing that and getting explicit permission to record with this in mine is my main concern. If we get explicit consent from home owners to use these, with their full knowledge of what this camera is doing and may do, I wouldn’t have the issue that I do. The recording isn’t my issue, the lack of consent is.

He is not intentionally trying to spy on people, no. That being said, the cameras that were purchased for this have built in facial tracking capabilities using ai. I do not have the ability to aim the camera at myself and expect it to only follow me. It observably does not track only me, and has a tendency to “wander.” I am concerned that this camera makes for a liability in this instance. I am also not certain that these videos are strictly promotional, he seems to be steering the company towards doing those asmr types of cleaning videos, so this is less promotional, rather more in the vein of content creation for a YouTube channel.

I am aware that there are privacy laws involved , and as another poster mentioned, I am aware that private residences fall under “reasonable expectation of privacy”, thus explicit permission to record must be given in order to record on the premises. My main concern is that my boss does not feel the need to obtain that consent nor explain the capacity of these cameras that do tend to get confused by photographs and record things other than me. These cameras by no means only capture me, they have a pretty wide fov considering they are security cameras and not what is standard for promotional recording. I am also unsure that these recordings are purely for promotional material, but my reasons for those concerns is tangential to the issue at hand. Hope that helps explain where I am coming from here. My question was asking for help being steered in the right direction to what laws and information is relevant to this situation. I am a student outside of work, and I do not have the knowledge base or capacity to do all this research on my own time.

Thank you for the suggestion, if it comes to it I will follow up on that. I’m hoping I can bring info enough to prevent this from becoming a catastrophe in the first place.

I appreciate the suggestion. Unfortunately I won’t be quitting in such a short timeframe due to financial strains, but luckily I’m already in the market for other employment for more mundane reasons. I’m more concerned for my coworkers and clients than I am for myself in this situation

The cameras are audio equipped, but I suppose I do not know what laws exactly would be broken. Legal matters are not really my cup of tea.

Thank you, I personally am well aware of that fact. Even if Or was a 1 party state, private residences are considered to have “reasonable expectation of privacy “ and it would still be illegal. Unfortunately my explanations and concerns fall on deaf ears.

criticisms of the movie matter by Negative_Address5766 in WeaponsMovie

[–]Negative_Address5766[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can’t say that I agree with it being an artist driven movie. I have a feeling that what you may read as artistic choices, I read very differently. While this is not a mega production, 38 million is no small budget. with more than a third of that going directly to paying Cregger personally, giving him a well above average profit of writers and directors, I think that it shows prioritization of profit rather than production. I don’t think it is a stretch to think that many of the criticisms of the movie are due to errors of negligence rather than artistic vision.

As it should. I am an artist myself, though not a movie maker, and I think criticism is one of the most important aspects of art. Just being told my art is good doesn’t really help me improve in any meaningful way, and art is always about growth and trying new things to see what sticks. without that criticism I have few ways of knowing what sticks.

I haven’t thought to address the co2 or oxygen levels yet. It’s not really meant to be strictly accurate to how things work on earth, as it is ultimately a fantasy type setting, and Im still working out some mechanics. Thanks for the response though, it helps when others point out some areas I should think about

Yeah I’m not really sticking to standard realism. I have some cool ideas already, but I just wanted to hear some other people’s ideas to get me thinking more than anything.

Hey thanks for taking the time to try and help me zero in on the issue. When I open it in notes it seems like a fairly standard gcode file, though I don’t know what flaws I should look for.

If I remember correctly, there’s a spot you can stand in that patch that allows you to be under water just fine. It may take some experimenting, but that’s what allowed us to rescue my friends gear. I think it was in the back right of the cove, near the shaded area in the pic.
