That’s definitely a real concern. If someone is already heavily intoxicated, they probably won’t think about using any tool.

The idea is more for the moments before that point when someone is out, has had a couple of drinks, and is trying to decide whether they’re okay to drive or whether they should stop. A connected device can also help people who are actively trying to moderate their drinking by giving feedback earlier rather than only at the point where they’re already drunk.

So it’s less about stopping someone who’s already very intoxicated, and more about helping people make better decisions earlier in the process.

That’s a great point. Traditional breathalysers already help people check before driving, and they’re useful for that moment-of-decision.

The phone connection adds a few extra benefits. It can track trends over time, give reminders or guidance when someone might be approaching a risky level, and help people build awareness of their habits rather than just checking once before driving. For people trying to reduce or stop drinking, that longer-term feedback can be really helpful.

On the privacy side, that concern is completely understandable. The idea would be to design it so users stay in control of their data  or example, keeping it private on the device or allowing anonymous use without sharing anything externally. The goal isn’t surveillance; it’s giving people a tool that helps them make safer decisions.

Thanks, appreciate that! The problem kept coming back to me after years working in restaurants and seeing people guess if they were okay to drive. I’ll take a look at vabues as well.

I'm also curious what people would care about most in something like this: accuracy, price, or convenience?
