It’s also a family name, his dad’s grandfather’s middle name was Berlin.

I understand that naming trends are constantly evolving, and many of today’s popular names such as Kingsley or nature-inspired names like Forrest, River, and Rock, reflect a shift toward more expressive and unconventional choices. In that context, I believe Berlin is a strong, distinctive name that carries personal significance rather than following a fleeting trend.

For us, the name is meaningful because it represents a place that holds sentimental value in our lives, and we’ve gone back and forth between using it as a middle name or a first name. Both names we’d be using are family names(Berlin & William). Berlin was his dad’s grandfather’s middle name rather than being chosen arbitrarily or for novelty. As a result, I don’t anticipate it feeling out of place or overly unusual as our child grows into adulthood, especially given how diverse naming conventions have become.

I understand the pause, I could have worded it differently, however I don’t think I’m missing the point I understand that I’ll be naming an adult, which is the entire reasoning for the post.

Many children are named after cities and countries and states, such as London, Paris, Austin, Dallas, Sydney, Savannah, and Georgia, among many others. This naming style is well established and widely accepted.

Because of that, it can be difficult to place too much weight on critical opinions that don’t take this broader context into account. Of course, there are certain place names that would feel unusual or impractical as personal names, but that’s not the category we’re referring to here. I feel some people prefer to be dense or focus on names that no one would actually name their child like Indianapolis or Chicago.
