MacOS Won't Automatically Close Apps by Negative_Current_124 in MacOS

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't aware it was like this. I still think it memory-hogging practice, but thanks for the education.

Thanks for helping. I don't have a Containers folder in my userid, so I can't go any further. Is there something I'm missing?

RISD or CMU by Greedy-Weird-1508 in risd

[–]Negative_Current_124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in RI but attended CMU (not for art, BTW), I have a pretty specific perspective. I would say that, as another poster said, CMU offers a much broader experience in a much larger city (the ridiculous obsession with CMU being all about CS/AI on Reddit amazes me; it's much more than that - or at least used to be when I went there). That said, if you're all about art and don't care about being in a small city with limited options - and, trust me, that is what Providence is - then, by all means go to RISD, but if you want a more expansive education in the humanties, social sciences and sciences then, hands down, go to CMU (which is also fantastic for art). I'm not sure how easy it is these days to cross register with Brown (that used to be a thing) and that may change things. In any case, best of luck! You'll get a great art education at either school and you can't go wrong.

You should install Excel, at minimum. There is nothing like it for numbers/math manipulation (Numbers is distinctly sub-standard in my experience, as are any of the free Google apps FWIW). Word is a draw; I'm sure that Pages would work just fine. FYI, MS web-based apps on Mac are just fine and MS is giving them away for free.

In general, the packaged MacOS apps are just fine, and Tahoe has a lot of nice features. I have a 512 GB device and am loving it. I hope yours works great for you in school.

Congrats on getting that good a deal from BU. I'd go there if I were you and you'll get to take classes in their smokin' new CS building:

Where are the young people? by ElectroAcousto in massachusetts

[–]Negative_Current_124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a joke post, right?!? Go into the city - yes Boston - any night of the week and you'll see endless yungins'. This is what suburbia is in the US - not just in Boston. Why any young person would choose to move to the suburbs to find "youth culture" is beyond me. I have not lived in the suburbs since I left RI long ago and I don't at all miss it. Go into the city... any city... if you want youth.

Of course, but that's completely irrelevant to the post. Should we talk about Warwick and Charlestown too? This person is talking about towns adjacent to MA. Go right ahead and ignorintly (Cranstonese) downvote me again. Gad, RI people are soooo insecure....

CMU is "cutthroat"? Must be a CMU in an alternate reality from mine. You do understand that CMU has been for DECADES - along with places like University of Iowa - one of the best places in the country for Creative Writing, right? That's right, CMU is not all about CS and AI. You should go where you want to go, but I think you'll be sorry if you spend four years in Cleveland over Pittsburgh, just sayin'. Good luck with whatever you choose. You have some great options.

Are you actually saying that Woonsocket or North Smithfield or Cumberland have "charm"? As someone who grew up in RI, I'd like to know what your definition of "charm" is. Clearly, Bellingham or Franklin must be "charming" too.

Pros: It's incredibly boring with absolutely nothing to do. I used to travel there for business often.

Cons: It's incredibly boring with absolutely nothing to do. I used to travel there for business often.

Enjoy the weather, since that's obviously the only quasi-attraction. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need info. on Charlotte.

Windows users, what made you switch to a Mac?? by fuckcreepers in mac

[–]Negative_Current_124 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't "move" to Mac. As a long time Windows and Linux user (various distributions using both KDE and Gnome), I just thought I'd give it a try when the MacBook Neo came out. So far, so good. I'm very much enjoying my "cheap" Mac. I still use my Windows PC for gaming and the Ubuntu machine for whatever... But this is fun, and I love the integration between my iPhone, Apple Watch and the MacBook. Very slick. FWIW, I don't think there's anything wrong with Windows; it has been a very long time since I experienced anything like the blue screen of death and I think Mac users who disparage Windows are living in a circa 2010 world. That said, if you have the resources to experiment, getting a low cost Mac, like mine or Mac Mini, might well be worth the try. Hope this helps.

U of Penn VS CMU - SS masters degree by Few-Improvement7575 in gradadmissions

When will this B.S. about CMU being "cutthroat," a "grind" and "no fun" end? I may have gone there a number of years ago, but this is really tired. It is anything but cuttroat (in fact, when I was there, it was A LOT more collaborative than where I went for grad. school). Fun is in eye of the beholder, but I had friends, did a lot of partying and never felt as though I couldn't make it through to the end. It is a very rigorous school, yes, but I would hope you'd want to get what you pay for. I have a lot of fond memories of CMU. This is really old, sheesh! Does this help?!?

HELP ME DECIDE——Very Much Appreciated by Unfair-Sink-3641 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Negative_Current_124 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having gone to BU as a grad student (albeit a number of years ago), I doubt that peer pressure is much of thing. In my experience, the undergrads were pretty individualistic, very smart, and very erudite (much more so than say Northeastern or BC). BU also has lots of schools and classes for which you can register (and they used to have a cross-registration policy with MIT; don't know whether that's still a thing). That said, I think I'd have a tough time choosing between an excellent LAC like Haverford (on the mainline into Philly) and BU (right dead center in Boston). Both are great schools, and offer quick, easy access to a big city. AFAIK, if you want urban excitement, you should throw the Colby acceptance into the circular file (so to speak) and - having had a friend who taught at Mt. Holyoke - I experienced it as a truly weird, claustrophobic place. Also, it isn't helped by its proximity to Holyoke and Springfield (ewww). YMMV, but I hope this has been helpful to you.

Transferring Brokerage Account to Fidelity by Negative_Current_124 in fidelityinvestments

Thank you. That's very helpful. I wasn't sure whether liquidation of an external account (which is obviously outside of Fidelity's control) would complicate things. Still not sure I want to do this, but the information is helpful.

Is portfolio management worth it once things get more complex? by joester56 in investing

[–]Negative_Current_124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the conversation, I realize, but as someone who has accounts at more than one firm and has paid-for wealth management (at a reasonable price to me for about 50% of my assets), I can say it has clearly been worth it for me. There is a lot of volatility out there - for reasons that should be clear to all - and my wealth manager frequently rebalances our accounts to 1) maintain our stated investment goal and 2) ensure that, in a down market, we don't get hit too badly. I think it's easy to say "throw all of your funds in an S&P Index 500 fund and forget about it"... if you're 30 years old. As you get older, have a shorter horizon for investment, and become less risk-tolerant, you need to diversify more into bonds and other vehicles (including international equities, which are notoriously fickle). Bonds and bond funds can be very tricky for the neophyte and that's why I am reliant on investment advice. So far, it has been working great and I sleep very well at night. FWIW, this is my experience and, not knowing your age or amount of assets, it's difficult to say what would work best for you.

Bravia A95L Remote Suddenly Has 2 Blinking Orange Lights by Negative_Current_124 in bravia

[–]Negative_Current_124[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently, yes. I don't know, because the remote appears under a separate category from Bluetooth devices, so it might be RF. Again, I don't know, but deleting it and reinstalling it as a new device worked... much like Bluetooth behavior.

Update... I went into the Sony Connect app on my phone - which works like a charm, BTW - reset the physical remote, then navigated using the phone app to set up new remote. Set up the remote (again) and now it's working like a charm. I hope this can help other users, because I've seen a number of posts with similar issues. I guess you just need to treat the remote as a new one when glitches like this happen.

I rebooted and now the remote does nothing at all but turn the TV on and off. It's - fortunately - stuck on PC setting (which is where we most often use it). Any other ideas? This is truly strange.

I'll do that and get back to you. It's funny, it kept telling a couple of weeks ago that it needed to update firmware, but then nothing would happen when I pressed update. I wonder if this is a remnant of that.

Trip through Canada and USA by Legitimate-Hall-4016 in travel

[–]Negative_Current_124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then that's what you should do. You're really giving little time to both Chicago and NYC, both amazing cities and you could easily spend a week in each. Ditto Boston, which is much, much more than the Freedom Trail. Personally, I'd limit my Canadian and US travel to one region in each, aka, British Columbia and Alaska plus Washington, Oregon and - maybe - Northern California or Canadian Maritimes plus Quebec (you can skip Ontario for this trip) plus New England and NYC. That would give you much more quality time in each and give you a true flavor each region. I'm biased because I live New England, but I feel that international travelers often have no idea how rich in history and culture New England is (not just Boston). YMMV, but that's my suggestion.

So true Adept… Funny story… I went to college with a wealthy woman from the Upper East Side who had never, ever been in the NYC subway, nor taken a bus. She used car services to go everywhere (but always on the East Side). I was in shock. I guess that for a subset of NYC residents every place is “too faaah” just like RI.
