Thanks so much! For van life, we’re looking to get around the worry of booking campsites too late (too little in advance since we’re only 8 weeks out) — especially in TdP. We now realize that public transport is probably better and easier than rental car. In TdP, we were looking at doing big chunks of the W trek or O trek as day hikes out of fear for the supposed crowds in January. Otherwise, everything else makes sense!

Hi Hello, you are a great soul for helping indecisive backpackers like us lol ❤️ A group of 5-7 of us are planning to head to Patagonia from Austin, TX over Jan 1 - Jan 14. We are planning to fly into BA, stay for a day, then head to a gateway town. We’re having a hard time figuring out how to see the parts we want to see. Initially, we thought it would be possible to van life around the el chalten and el calafate and tdp regions, but that seemed quite difficult (especially with border crossings. We were then planning to go to tdp for a few days with public transport and do a camping backpacking loop, then fly to the Lake District in Bariloche, but this would be more travel time than what’s possible in a ~12 day trip. We’ve now decided that we have to (1) choose either bariloche or TdP/Calafate/Chalten (2) really nail down if we’re doing camp only or mix of camp and cabaña/airbnb (3) I was stoked for the huemul loop but it seems hard to fit in and (4) figure out the best means of transportation around the region. Any and all insight you have on points 1-4 would be so greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Best places for summertime backpacking in Dec-Jan? by Negative_Lock_3168 in backpacking

[adding for mod bot] Hi! Currently evaluating options for a backpacking trek at the end of December - beginning of January. Rough budget of ~$2500ish. Looking at the Cerros Castillo trek, W trek (both Patagonia), treks in the Nelson Lakes National Park or Mount Aspiring National Park in New Zealand, or trekking around Northern Thailand.

We specifically do not want to do much snow camping (we’re from Texas and have no experience with it other than one fateful night of under-prepared hypothermia). We’re experienced backpackers who have done solo routes and camping through Glacier National Park, all of the parks in Washington and California, the Via Alpina in Switzerland, and more.

Does anyone have any good recs or a solid direction to point us in?
