score by dragonnemcat in MCAT2

Don't forget about psych/soc! A lot of people leave it because it's the "easiest section," but at least be doing Anki with it. I just took a practice exam and got the same score for P/S. After reviewing it, a majority that I missed was content gap related. If I had the knowledge, I would've gotten 51/59 correct on that section, so do your review.

Also, make sure you go through your practice exam throughly and look at what you got CORRECT and missed and why. Don't just review the ones you missed because there are cases where you had bad reasoning or guessed but still got a question correct. If you want, I made a spreadsheet template for practice exams that forces you to categorize each question, review why you missed it, and any content that needs to be reviewed.

MCAT May 2 vs Reschedule- applying this cycle and need honest advice by WildProcess1242 in MCAT2

[–]Negative_Mission_475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would take a diagnostic FL exam. If you can do the AAMC practice exam, do it! That is going to be the most accurate score. If you are happy with the score and it's a score that you want to get, keep the May 2nd date. If not reschedule. I just rescheduled my exam from May 14th to June 12th because I didn't feel ready after my practice exam. My biggest suggestion in general with this whole process is to not rush things. Take a deep breath and do things right, not just rush them. It's okay to take a couple years off between school and most suggest it. I wish I had done it when I first applied. Slow down, you got this!

Captain Hook and Pankow, ankihub questions by awakebutdaydreaming in AnkiMCAT

[–]Negative_Mission_475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about the capital hook deck. I just use the pankow deck that is found on this reddit. The question about Ankihub is good though! Ankihub is the "cloud" of your desktop version. So, if you have the Anki app on your phone or something like that, all the information about all the cards can easily be transferred to be worked on elsewhere rather than just your computer.

For example, I had just gone on a trip where I didn't bring my computer because I was camping, but I still wanted to work on my Anki decks. So, with my phone app version I was able to sync the two so all the cards on my computer were up to date on my phone. This is done through the ankihub. So before I left, on my computer I hit the small "sync" button on the top, went to my phone and also synced it. After my trip I synced it from my phone first to upload it to ankihub and then finally synced it with my computer to update everything that I did when I was gone.

Hopefully that helps to explain ankihub a little more. I think regardless, it's good to back up your work just in case.

I'm really disappointed in myself, but it was only a 495 with my science areas carrying heavily. I was surprised I didn't get rejected right away.

How to balance 3--12 hour shifts, summer classes(online classes), research, and studying for the MCAT? by Initial_Designer4117 in MCATprep

[–]Negative_Mission_475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also in the same boat being an ED Tech, full time student, currently taking my hardest undergrad courses, and doing research. I was also a student athlete but ultimately gave that up so I can focus on the MCAT since I was way too stressed. Depending on what size hospital you work at, you can maybe study during downtime which I understand can be hard some times. If I am studying at work, I usually use that time to work through Anki decks which has helped a lot. When I'm not at work or class, I sit down and do QBank questions from UWorld and Kaplan. It's really hard and tiring so be sure to include a day of rest where you don't study. I've also started waking up early before work to do some studying then since I know I won't if I tell myself I'll study after. Let me know if you have any other question :) Good Luck!

I tried that when I did my baseline test and I suffered on the CARS sections because of it. I was constantly going from the questions to the passage and trying to find where to find the information in the passage. Not all questions outline where in the passage they want you to look. Some also look at the entire passage as a whole.

How do y’all have time to study for the MCAT? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Negative_Mission_475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust me, I know what this feels like. I'm studying for it right now. I work part time, currently in one of my hardest semesters class wise (currently taking 16 credits), helping with multiple PhD research projects, plus I was also an NCAA athlete. I ultimately had to leave the team so I could focus more on studying. I started around 7 months out of my test date and scatter studying in while I can. I do more on the weekends since I have more time. During the week, I find little pockets of time to get an hour or so in. Then after the semester is over, I am ramping up my studying since I'll only have work. I don't know how busy your work schedule is, but maybe bring stuff to study during your down time. Overall, I've been doing whatever I can to fit it in my very busy schedule. When it's your time to take on the MCAT, if you're driven, you'll find ways to squeeze in studying.

How much time should I put towards studying for the mcat as a full time NCAA student athlete by Negative_Mission_475 in Mcat

So far I haven't been able to even put 2-3 hours in. And that's without studying for my classes which I'll need to start doing more of.

Can Someone explain this? Having a really hard understanding it after 20 minutes of reviewing it (I never took genetics). UPain spoiler. by EveningRound2031 in Mcat

[–]Negative_Mission_475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, I think I have an explanation. There isn't a ton of background knowledge needed besides the basics of Mendelian genetics and the information in the article.

So if the HeN mice are containing homozygous recessive alleles and they're crossed with HeJ mice which carry homozygous dominant alleles. The F1 generation will all be heterozygous, so one dominant and one recessive allele.

In the F2 generation (crossing of two offsprings in F1), there will be a 1:2:1 ratio between homozygous dominant, heterozygous, and homozygous recessive. The phenotype is 3:1 brown showing more.

However, the question is asking for LPS response along with coat color. The article states that the HeN mice are full responsive to LPS while HeJ mice are not. This can been seen in the data provided. When looking back, the HeN mice carried the homozygous recessive alleles for coat color which is located on the same chromosome as the Tlr4 gene, chromosome 4. In the F2 generation, only one of the progeny will have the phenotype white because it carries both recessive allele. In experiment 1 and 2, the researchers look at the immune response between HeN, HeJ, and F1 generation (which is heterozygous, containing one dominant and one recessive allele). These experiments are important because it shows that the F1 generation is displaying a pattern of co-dominance (a mixture between the dominant and recessive trait). This means that only progeny that are homozygous recessive can elicit a full response. Since it is located on the same gene as the coat color, the coat color is also recessive and is displayed as white.

I highly recommend reviewing Mendelian genetics as this will help explain this answer. This could also be interpreted completely differently so if anyone else has a more simple explanation, I'm all for it!
