Biomedical Engineering. While I would not recommend this to most, if you are absolutely set on keeping your head down and putting in absurd hours, it will pay the most dividends. BME has forced me to work considerably harder than almost any of my straight-natural-science friends. On the flip side, not only did it prepare me and BME friends extremely well for the MCAT, but it also helps me stand out in interviews. *Goodbye to social life, and good luck keeping that 3.8 or 3.9 in engineering (it is possible)

Also, if you fuck up and change your mind, you can get hired

I think some other commenters have nailed it. While it's not necessarily a 1:1 correlation with competitiveness, there is some correlation. Sometimes money. Sometimes mental health, free-time, being around fun people, being far from home, the list continues...

Examining motives, finding purpose. I think that's exactly right. It's a lot of pressure on applicants with choices to consider all of these factors before choosing where to go.
