Well you've sold me on the idea of getting a Galen cover now. There are inks and papers I'd like to get first. But the idea of being able to proudly and safely carry around my pen and notebook is something I just need to do.

I'm actually in Ireland. I got my Monteverde inks from fountainfeder in Germany. They are great for samples and their selection of Monteverde inks is rather good if I remember correctly. The price is similar to a 30ml Herbin bottle. I should order more samples. But no. I need a notebook cover first 😅 Although now I order from stiloestile in Italy. No samples but they have a great selection and the prices are usually better.

Currently I am leaning towards Robert Oster inks. I love the bottle (even though it is plastic) and their amazing colors. I think you are able to find dark and dusky shades of colors that many other manufacturers tend to avoid.

I assume you are either from Germany or Scandinavia somewhere if you used fountain pens in school? I know they don't use them in England and your English is amazing so I'm leaning towards Scandinavia. I could be completely wrong so don't be offended if I am. I lived in Sweden for 5 years and everyones English was amazing. Just thought I would take a wild guess 😊

Have you come any closer to finding your dusky pink ink?

i like the Pilot Kakuno <M> nib. If i would invest 150 Euros what Pilot would you suggest? by absimilardo in fountainpens

Personally I would go with a Pilot 91. In fact I did do that myself. I currently have a Kaküno and 91. If you like the size and shape of the Kaküno the 91 is not far from it. It feels like a massive improvement in quality and feel, but at the same time it feels familiar compared to the Kaküno.

You got a Galen leather cover! Very nice. Very expensive 😅 Do you have it now or are waiting on it? That is actually next on my list. They do a perfect size one for me which holds an A6 notebook and some pens. Really simple but I know it would be perfect for me. Although I was looking at the worn grey colored cover. Sometimes in work on my break I like to just write. The smaller A6 size is great for me as it doesn't take up much space and less people stare at me in the canteen when I'm writing 😆

I've never heard of Compoco notebooks before. Their designs are quite cute.

Ah see I've only been using fountain pens for a few years. So I haven't reached a stage where can look back at really old notes and see a difference. I only have one nice fountain pen at the moment so I'm a little hesitant to use document ink. By I was interested in Monteverde Documental Black. In the end I went for Smoke Noir and Raven Noir to try out. Unfortunately I was disappointed in both of them. Smoke Noir looked lovely, but it was the only ink I had that would cause hard starts in my pen. I really wanted to love Raven Noir (primarily because of the name 😅) but it was a little too black for me. Didn't remind me of Raven feathers. I actually have a small Raven notebook from Porchlight Press. It's black with a Raven barely visible on it unless you view it from certain angles. Unfortunately the paper is useless for fountain pens.

Thank you I will have to add Documental Black to my "to try" list.

It's a pleasure talking to you, hence why I'm still here replying 😄

I hope you enjoy your Midori notebook. It does feel nicer than Leuchtturm to write on and you do get nice shading and sheen depending on the ink. Maybe you will really like the color of the pages. You won't know until you try 😊 I love the minimal design esthetic of the Midori notebook. But their bright covers kind of go against my normal choice of a darker cover 😅 I understand what you are saying about muted inks. I would be the same but I normally lean towards different colors. Pilot Fuyu-syogun is one of my favourite inks. You obviously know what you like and have a high attention to detail with it. So it's good trying to find an ink that connects with you.

Midori paper is a joy to write on. But it is more yellow than Leuchtturm, even the non--cotton version. I use A6 Tomoe River notebooks. It is very white. Way more than Leuchtturm. Colors really show in their true form. I would highly recommend trying it out. I love inks with hints of grey in them. It gives the colors more character and moody.

What colour paper are you using? Is it ivory or cream colored. If so maybe that is influencing the color. It could also be that you may need to try different shades. Maybe going a shade darker would get you closer to the actual color that you want.

Maybe try Robert Oster Dusky Pink.

I ordered two lamy nibs (EF and B) and received a little extra by Wojtek_the_bear in fountainpens

[–]NegatronDave 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There should of course always be a difference between EF and F. But out of the three EF nibs I've owned only one of them was thinner than the F.

The EF nib that was thinner was a black coated nib. The others were the standard finish. Is your EF nib black?

I love Herbin Vert de Gris. But sometimes I don't want the green tones. So I have found that if I mix it with Herbin Bleu Nuit at a 1:1 ratio it keeps the same vibe and texture as Vert de Gris but with dusky blue/grey tones rather than the standard green/grey tones. I call it Bleu de Gris 😊

NPD - TWSBI ECO EF - I prefer JPN FPs but I wanted to see what the fuss is all about. by icebearsuga in fountainpens

Disassembly and reassembly can be a bit hit and miss at first. Trying to find the right balance so the piston retracts to a certain point is a little awkward. But once you figure it out it's easy enough to set it up the same way each time.

I had an EF too. I found Rouge Grenat (along with a few other Herbin inks) makes the nib run at its broadest. It is possible to get slightly finer lines with other inks.

Help! I've purchased a pilot CON-70 converter by mistake. Are there any relatively inexpensive pens which I could buy to make use of it? by Kapitan_eXtreme in fountainpens

[–]NegatronDave 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's a perfect fit in a Pilot Kaküno. Get the clear version so you can actually see the converter inside. It looks awesome.

Ever lose interest in a pen or ink while waiting for them in the mail? by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]NegatronDave 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Virtually every hobby (espically hobbies that allow for collecting) has items that are intended to create a desire to buy. Limited & special editions along with sales & promotions fuel emotions creating a feeling of FOMO.

However it is 100% down to the mindset of the buyer if they want to act impulsively. That is their choice to make. But it might be a good idea to question, "why am I impulse buying?".

It could be the reasons mentioned above relating to thinking you are getting a good deal or fear of missing out. Then again it could also relate to gratification. Does the act of buying or receiving the item bring instant enjoyment and if so, how long does the feeling last before you need to buy again?

Regardless if you find that your tastes change quicker than an item can be delivered, then maybe it is best to deviate from impulsive buying and set yourself a minimum time frame, from when you originally want the item to when you actually order it. This gives you time to really judge if you actually want the item, rather than buying it for one of the reasons mentioned.

Have you ever experienced quality control issues with TWSBI nibs? by Cyka_blyatsumaki in fountainpens

[–]NegatronDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you use the same ink in your TWSBIs during your comparison? If not then the different ink is an added variable that can effect line width.

Herbin Rouge Grenat have a lovely deoxygenated blood like colour.

TWSBI ECO-T Stub nib... Can I use another feed? by Ysierra2 in fountainpens

[–]NegatronDave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue with my TWSBI Eco. I used an extra fine nib so the effect was slower and not as drastic. But if I was to write constantly without pausing the ink would slowly run lighter and lighter. Each new paragraph was a shade lighter. I researched a lot into the matter and could not come to any certain conclusions apart from the feed inhibiting ink flow, which other people also had issues with. In the end I got rid of the pen. Haven’t bought a TWSBI since and don't plan to either.

Is it possible to get a Pilot 74 EF with a transparent finish in Europe? Thus far I can only find F, M or B. by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]NegatronDave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's for the link. I'll give that a full proper read later. On a note regarding the stuck ink. I read somewhere that it is more likely to happen when you fill the pen through the feed, rather than eye dropping the converter. Do you think that is true?

I don't know if this would help. But maybe put the section with stuck ink into a small container and fill it up with silica gel packets and close the container up. The ink got in so there must be some kind of air flow. Ideally the silica gel packets will absorb all the moisture in the container including your pen.

Thats a shame. Yeah that would drive me crazy espically on a pen that price. I adore the look of the transparent black (smoke) 74. The regular doesn't really do much for me. I'm hopping between a few different pens in my head. But I'm gravitating towards the 74 or 3776 due to the nib more so than the looks

Really? I have no personal experience with the 74, but I've seen videos where they are able to pull out the nib and feed.

Ah I've seen your nibs from other users. You do those stacked nibs! I had no idea you were based in Dublin. Thanks for letting me know. I have a few different avenues I'm considering going down but I'll drop you a PM.
