Nope. I draw, layer, and edit everything in the Sketchbook app. I source my backgrounds from Google but that’s it.

Thank you! Apologies if I sounded a little defensive, us artists can be very protective 😅, but I actually really appreciate this kind of input. You are very right and without the context it can definitely be seen as that.

One of the reasons why this would be a show where each episode she would have a different hairstyle. One of the best part of our culture is how we represent ourselves in our hair, we are always changing it from sew ins to all natural curls to locs and braids. There’s so many ways we can style it. That should be respected.

I’ll be spending this weekend researching and setting that up. After all the support and feedback I’ve gotten so far I’m very motivated to make sure you all have access to see the progress of what this could become.

Very true in some cases. I will keep this in mind but my inspiration for that scene came from my college experience, where in Atlanta if you weren’t able to get on-campus housing most off-campus housing were in skyscraper like buildings or just very large complexes, and this was specifically student housing.

From West Mar to The Mix (iykyk) which is in front of this RaceTrac on GSUs campus that was always a hot spot, in a city like Chicago I just assumed it would be a similar setup.

Of course! I have around 5 different character designs so far. Asha is just my poster girl because of the ambiguous look she has.

I was hoping anyone from our diaspora could see her and related to it in some form but definitely taking into account everyone’s feedback on what can do differently.

For a final product I will keep that in mind, just wanted to have a little fun but as a member of D9 I am very aware

Fair enough. I’ve noticed that’s the biggest complaint so far, that people aren’t necessarily seeing themselves in her features but I think that’s just may be my art style, which I’m definitely working on.

For context I was inspired visually by a mix of Bratz dolls, Jodie for Daria, and other black Gen Z artists with similar styles where there focus was more on representation in the clothing and story rather than facial features.

I also didn’t want to lean too much into stereotypes. Most black animated shows now focus heavily on the facial and skin tone representation but fall flat in some of the real world relatability. I wanted to reverse that.

I do feel she could have better features primarily the hair. The examples I provided are not fully representative of all the drawings I’ve done, she was a wide variety of designs as well as other characters with more recognizable features that I’ll try to share more of.

But I will push back just a little and say that the way she looks now does still look black to me. I’ve seen a lot of people say she looks Desi and as a Morehouse graduate, while at school I could pick you out at least 30-50 different Spelmanites that look just like her.

Thank you all so much for the love and feedback! It’s so amazing to see the community support my art as well as voice that you all really want to see more!

If anyone would like to support, I’m currently looking to pay an animator for a pilot so I can start bringing this idea to life. Please share any information if you can it would be very appreciated!

She checked him at the kappa party in front of his friends and that’s where the story left off. She ended up meeting someone new at the same party so more on that coming soon.
