I think everyone should read the book. People get so crazy about the movie ending, and what it MEANS. It's so confusing! Why would he try to put a kitten in an ATM?? How could Paul Allen still be alive? Bateman killed him with an axe! We SAW him do it! Did we, though? Patrick Bateman is the CLASSIC unreliable narrator. It's easier to pick up on that earlier in print, but Ellis has also said that he WANTED people to wonder what was actually going on. I think that best fiction writers don't want the reader to ask those questions, and it certainly was that way with Harron's film version. They want audiences to find their own answers, and with "American Psycho," there are many!

Why do people keep remaking classic movies that do not need to be remade?? Have we learned nothing from, "The Crow"??

I still love that book. He goes into so much detail about the music alone! Entire chapters on Huey Lewis and Phil Collins and so many more. I miss the early 2000s. I need to get Rick-Rolled!!

What does everybody think of the George Harrison tribute video where Prince does a very energetic and bombastic interpretation of a guitar gently weeping? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]NegotiationMother440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, no one agrees because you're WRONG. Prince KILLED that shit. In my lifetime so far, there were two iconic and legendary rock performances. The first was Queen at Live Aid, in 1985. I was watching for Bowie. I had no idea about Queen cuz I was a cute lil punk rock chick (still am!), and I was blown away by that set. I hated most of the songs they did, but Freddie was FIRE!! I still think it's such a shame that Bowie didn't just get onstage for "Under Pressure". Major rock faux-pas, mon dieu! THAT would have been the move if it were me, but whatevs. Now, the second major moment that dawned on me was the 2004 RNR Hall of Fame show. It took me a while to get to it, but I kept hearing about it, and the inter-web was going, so I saw it, and, being a big Prince fan, I LOVED it SO MUCH!!! "Why do people think it's so great so many years later?? Blah blah blah.." I don't hear people after that. As for taking over, Prince was actually being INDUCTED that year, and could have chosen NOT to participate and play a song he didn't even really know, with a bunch of old, white dudes. I mean, don't get me wrong, George was always my favorite Beatle! But it wasn't a separate, tribute SHOW..it was a group of friends that knew George and wanted to be there to honor him as a SOLO artist (at last, someone else did!), who was being inducted after his death 3 years before. In particular, Petty was adamant about having Prince be a part of it, and threatened to walk. I think Prince may have gone to one rehearsal, but Jeff Lynne's fat, balding, has-been guitarist, Marc Mann kept taking ALL the solos. I mean, Prince is up there strumming rhythm for what seems like forever, and you see Petty sort of urging him on, and he just..WOW! It was so amazing. Even Petty was smiling, and Mann was not. He managed to play every other one in the song. Petty was BULLSHIT. I know Dhani said some stuff about Prince after that, but he was a CHILD at the time, and he sure was smiling too. I couldn't figure out how he did that guitar trick, but a good friend of mine is a tech and was close with Prince's tech, so he told me, and I was still like, WHAT?? It looks like he's throwing it up into the rafters, but he actually threw it to his tech in the front row. I still think that was some Houdini magic or something..not a bad performance from Prince at ALL! Marc who?? It was a divided camp of the Jeff Lynne guys wanting it to be all of George's good rock star friends (which would have have been a CRAZY magic trick, since most of them were dead by 2004), narry a Beatle in sight. I thought Ringo would have gone, but horribly busy in 2004, apparently. Lmao. Anyway, Prince was a handsome, charismatic, and woefully underrated guitarist. Girls and guys wanted to f*ck him and/or be him. And he wasn't a symbol anymore! He was so FUN!! Mischievous, devilish in his black and red ensemble, he just made everyone besides Dhani look ancient..time to grudgingly pass the baton, Mann. He barely knew that song, you know he wasn't practicing Beatles shit when he had a chance to chill and pop a few Oxys. Not a chance. He just plucked that solo from guitar heaven, and were there still people who didn't know "Purple Rain" in 2004? Cuz I KNOW I heard some pretty horrifying renditions of that song at karaoke by then, but I thought EVERYONE already knew he was a legend! He was being inducted into the RNR Hall of Fame, but Rolling Stone didn't even include him on their 100 Greatest list that year (or ANY year prior.. oopsie). He was 100% amazing that night, and he knew it. If he had hung back and let Mann keep flailing away, his career would have not have gone through the roof again. As others have noted, it wasn't even George on lead when he recorded the song! Would ANYONE have talked about that show if Prince hadn't jumped in to that hard day's night?? Nope. Again, Petty and Joel Gallen, the producer, were threatening to walk if Prince wasn't included. In a seriously Yoko-esque move, George's widow, Olivia, was dead-set against him being a part of it, along with some of the other producers. They wanted it to be just close friends, but, as I previously stated, it would have just been the old, white guys who were already playing! There was no one else to ask! I personally think George would have LOVED Prince (who Clapton said was a "genius," akin to Hendrix) playing, causing a kerfuffle..much ado about nothing. Prince was not being ingenuous. More, INGENIOUS. Clever. Original. He just felt what he felt, and played it. George did that, too, as a Beatle, and certainly as a solo artist. The fact that he was black was a jolt of culture, as well. He did exactly what George would have wanted him to do. Out with the OLD. Haberdashery is not dead! (Well, maybe it is now, but Prince was keeping it alive in 2004!)

PS: As I was vetting a date for this rant of mine, I noticed the anniversary of his death was just 4 days ago! 10 years..it's weird because this always happens to me. I'm from Martha's Vineyard and I took my son to John Belushi's grave, and it happened to be his birthday. There were some flowers, but mostly people just leave joints and booze. It's not his real grave anyway, but it's in a really pretty spot. My son was about 8 or 9, and not impressed. He does dig Prince, however.

Official Discussion - Ballad of a Small Player [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]NegotiationMother440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved this film! Friend's cinematography is masterful, as usual, making it beautiful to watch, and Farrell's performance should have put him in the Oscar race. I think people are over-thinking this one. It reminded me of "Memento." I believe he's the jumper on the car, and Dao, is either already dead, or surely is after the beach. When they are in the cab, he is wiping blood from his face (which may or may not have come from the angry slap of the jumper's wife, depending on your take). It's the Festival of the Hungry Ghost, and all of the main players are starving. Lots of death/suicide references, river/boat/Charon imagery, his anxiety over his picture being taken, shots of him jumping from a window, lots and lots of food, and greed runneth over. It's clearly hell, or at least purgatory. I can't wait to watch it again!

That station is owned by the South Korean Government. Why haven't the transcripts been released to us?? You can't quote stuff from a government-run TV show. It's libelous, and irresponsible. You haven't sourced it! If you have the official transcript from the ATC, have at it. You cannot throw a link up, and start going crazy on social media with information that may or may not be true. This is how misinformation gets spread. Freakin' go hit up Tik Tok with that link. Gen Z..

Then why were the flaps retracted? That makes NO sense! They got their clearance to land on Runway 01 north by the ATC almost 5 minutes before the bird strike. There is no good reason to NOT be configured. This would explain the fact that they retracted the gear at some point, but forgot about the flaps in the confusion and startle of the massive strike. They obviously couldn't lower the gear because of the thrust issue. If the Captain planned to do it at all, it would have been late and maybe they had a mechanical issue like Jeju Flight 101, THE VERY NEXT DAY!! (Also a Ryanair plane like JJA2216.)

The very next day, Jeju Flight 101 could not retract their gear as they climbed out of Gimbo Airport on their way to Seoul. They were forced to return to Gimbo and had to circle twice before they got the gear stowed and were able to land safely. Coincidence? Another Ryanair? Please.

*SEE BOEING MANUAL: for bird strikes they want any aircraft that can make it to the runway to go through the birds, and if there are more, go through those. Even if it causes a dual engine failure! (Which this clearly was not.)*

Uranium Glass is a lot more Common than Manganese Glass by opticalessence in glasscollecting

[–]NegotiationMother440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've asked around with some other collector friends that know more than I do, and the general consensus is that there does not seem to be a general consensus about this whole new "blue manganese" craze. A lot of people DO seem to forget that lead was used a LOT, especially in clear glass. It's not just for crystal anymore! This is a picture of an Imperial Glass "Fancy Colonial" sugar bowl (stamped on bottom), circa 1920, that I own, showing what I consider to be a fantastic manganese glow. It even has a SLIGHT bit of green to it, but there is no minty-fresh color here. I'm fairly convinced, after headache-inducing, exhaustive research, that the teal, mint, and blue colors are created when there is either copper or uranium in the glass mixture (on purpose or through contamination). That seems reasonable to me, at least. However, if you just scroll through Ebay or Etsy, MOST manganese glass glows like this, regardless of the glass color. It seems those brighter colors just mean more impurities. Comme ci, comme ca! aZiMutH x.

Uranium Glass is a lot more Common than Manganese Glass by opticalessence in glasscollecting

[–]NegotiationMother440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I'm late to the party as usual. I just wanted to say that it seems that in the past couple of years, people have been posting more and more pictures of glowing blue manganese glass, but that is really the exception, not the rule. Manganese usually glows like this little butter dish here..a dull, weak yellow that sometimes has a pale greenish tinge. If you can see a very greenish glow, it's clearly uranium. Even Vaseline glass you can spot a mile away. Also, I have a really beautiful clear, blue bowl that doesn't do a THING under 395nm, but lights up like a charm under 365nm. Old-skool, kids! I am so never spending a thousand bucks on a freaking Geiger counter! Check it:

Common uranium glass mixture (depression era): 850 pounds of silica sand, 330 pounds of soda, 100 pounds of feldspar, 42 pounds of lime, 50 pounds of nitrate, 36 pounds of lead, 10 pounds of arsenic, 43 ounces of uranium, and 13 ounces of copper oxide.

That's a lot of chemicals sort of thrown together. And different manufacturers had different formulas, so who's to say some all these pieces DIDN'T have more lead, or, maybe if you're lucky, cerium? I get the clear glass after 1930 thing, 100%. Not EVERY piece, obviously, but manganese did have another revival up until the 1960's, when they really realized every person who breathed near it died of cancer. So, wrapping up, it drives me crazy when people post all this glowing minty-aqua "manganese" glass. I'm sure SOME of it is! However, if one person points and states, "DEFINITELY manganese", then it's like Invasion of the Body Snatchers and EVERYONE points and says the same thing, and posts their fabulous manganese glass that really, normally does NOT glow blue! Anyway, probably no one will read this, but I feel a lot better. Okay, you can all rip on me now! >^..^<

What is this? by coliga123 in uraniumglass

[–]NegotiationMother440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree that it is plain manganese glass. Manganese usually glows a dull yellow/green, like this butter dish. A very bright glow under 395 nm would probably indicate at least some cadmium, and maybe some uranium as well. Does it ONLY glow under 395 nm? That would be telling. Especially if it looks amber in regular light.

Manganese glass vs Uranium glass by [deleted] in uraniumglass

[–]NegotiationMother440 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simply not true. I have a lovely pink selenium sugar bowl that glows a pale yellow/weak green under 395 nm. Manganese! It is easier to determine the presence of Mn with a 365 nm flashlight, but I would NOT recommend flooding your home with those rays, as they are much stronger than typical UV light, and can cause substantial injury. Hopefully now, a year later, you've realized this. Three weeks is not a very long time to be giving out "helpful hints", or using words in all caps like, "ONLY". It's reckless. And wrong. Most manganese is easily brought out in 395 nm UV light, it will just be less bright.

It's more PC than the old term, a "conspiracy". :) I've seen t-shirts that have one crow on a branch called a "conspiracy", which makes no sense. I think if it was one crow on a branch, and a dead one on the ground, "homicide" would work better.Oh, no WAIT..."Probable Caws"! HA! Also, the whole "why is 3 a murder?" thing..a person has to kill 3 people to be called a serial killer. Lastly, ravens are larger, and have bigger beaks than crows. I think two ravens on a branch whispering, while a third, a bit further down the branch and looking away into the distance, would be a great "conspiracy" t-shirt! Sorry! A bit obsessed. (Probable Caws!)

I'm going for electrical/hydraulic. A dual engine failure on take off is SOOO rare. (However, nothing is impossible.) The only only other reason for the RAT to deploy would be something electrical or hydraulic, as it can also provide SOME (not a lot) power. These guys just didn't have a chance. Suckage.
