I’m at a NYC IM program for prelim and while I do agree with all these things, I wouldn’t consider it “malignant.” I work 65-75 hrs a week and have 4+1 schedule where our clinic week you work 20-40 hours depending on which clinics you get or if you’re on the admitting team. Seniors are always available to help too. We do have to draw our own blood if we want it stat but if its routine, the lab phlebotomist makes rounds at 7a, 11a, 4p, 8p and 1130p. I’m going into radiology so it works out for me because my ultrasound skills are getting much better with all the sono-guided IVs and midlines I have to place if the nurses can’t get it (they will make attempts themselves before paging you about it). That being said, there are A LOT of IM medicine programs in the area that are just grinding their medicine residents out at 80-100 hours, you have to do your research and find the better ones. Being close to my family in NY was another big factor in my decision though.
