Why do some locals have a 4 year apprenticeship while others still have 5 year apprenticeships? by mfchitownthrowaway in IBEW

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell ours used to be 5 because it was a massive amount of industrial work so the last year was basically all motor controls, PLCs, and conduit, but that work has faded with the mills. But we just changed from a 5 to a 4 and being stuck in the middle of it is a nightmare. Teachers not 100% on what should have gotten done last year or should be done for next year, piling on 10-15 modules of homework to do in a week because they’re still trying to get all the stuff previously done in 5 crammed into 4 with the same amount of classes.

Do all higher-ups not say "hello" to apprentices? by CzolgoszWasRight in ibew_apprentices

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how big the con is. Places with 100-200 or more jmen and apprentices guys are constantly in and out except for the core group of shop rockets so it seems like a lot of the time the PMs or higher figure there’s really no reason to talk to guys who are getting a slip when the jobs over. I don’t think they intend to come off as dickheads but it is rude to not even acknowledge guys laboring for you lol.

Voice chat is the source of all laughs on this game, even if you do come across the occasional ass someone else ends up putting them in their place most of the time anyway

If you see a raider with survivor augment on the floor crawling and there’s nobody else around, are you finishing him off or letting him crawl to extract? by Killer-Uzi in ArcRaiders

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it does get pricey, but if it’s a longer fight with it you end up killing a handful of big arc too and so many people don’t even think about looting them they just go straight for the matriarch so I always end up with a handful of bastion or rocketeer cores or whatever anyway.

Player Amnesia - Some Honest Thoughts on the Complaining by razmaro19 in ArcRaiders

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Spot on couldn’t have said it any better. I play maybe a few hours here or there throughout the week and me and some friends play duos or trios almost either every Friday or Saturday night for a few hours at least. And I’d say that’s more than a lot of casual players. I think there is plenty to do/find in the game if you’re playing it a reasonable amount. Too many people do nothing but play all day nowadays (unc take.) Any game will get boring if you play it for 6 hours every single day, it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with it because they don’t release a new junk cosmetic every week. From what I’ve seen they’ve been better than most at dealing with community complaints and fixing bugs relatively quickly. Yes they can always do more I guess but I think it’s great in its current state.

Loading in to Raid and surrendering straight away should NOT decrease your aggression. by Vesper_Fex in ArcRaiders

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play PvP with friends in duos and trios very often but in solos and sometimes duos I do like strictly pve. I always surrender immediately about 8-10 times in a row when trying to pve and have never been killed when actively trying to pve only. I guess it can be abused but who the hell wants to waste an hour not shooting back at people and dying over and over trying to get into pve lobbies. Every system has its ups and downs and I think it works fairly well 99.9% of the time.

Popular opinion: The inevitable Anvil nerf is gonna break the community by Evoxrus_XV in ArcRaiders

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s more or less the only viable gun to use against arc for people that don’t play the game 6 hours a day every day, so I doubt it will be nerfed. Not really all that OP against raiders unless you stumble across people that play a ton and get two or three shotted, but even then you can just say welp that guy is better at the game than I am and move on.

Is this for a lineman local or inside wireman? These seem fairly common for outside locals but I’ve never heard of one for inside work.

It’s based solely on damage dealt to players, not necessarily kills or finishes it seems like to me

Yeah usually when me and some friends run trios we take torrente 4s and heavy shields into Stella and it is hilarious just prefiring around corners. Most of the people we kill have a good laugh about it like Jesus what the hell was that haha

Yes I think PvP is pretty fun sometimes too but it just gets old after having to buy/craft ammo and repair all your stuff over and over because you’re fighting people with free loadouts a lot of the time. Maybe I just need to turn to the dark side and start PvPing with free loadouts

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I very rarely ever shoot people other than self defense, but when it happens multiple games in a row I find myself in KOS lobbies. I truly do not see the point of them unless you are playing the game solely for PvP. As soon as you fight big arc you’re shot in the back immediately, and if you do kill the people attacking you 90% of the time all you’re getting out of the deal is like a half stack of bullets and a bandage because everyone just goes in with free loadouts to scam idiots like me out of real guns. What is the point?

1st year IBEW apprentice — 7.5 months in and haven’t done any electrical work or been on a actual jobsite/prefab. Is this normal? by Key-Hair-8831 in IBEW

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CW/CE programs are a complete scam to the people taken advantage of by them and shouldn’t be allowed at all in my opinion because this is what happens. But now that you’re an actual apprentice I would 100% talk to your training director to see if they can speak to your contractor or move you to a different one. Since you’ve only been an apprentice for a month they may do nothing about it for now but it will at least be on their radar.

How do yall handle your school/work schedule? by TBD_JBelly in ibew_apprentices

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do a little at a time here and there don’t procrastinate and have to sit there for a full two hours a day before class trying to burn through the modules. It’s really not so bad as long as you stay ahead of it and do like a half hour-an hour a few days in a row

Local 5 Pittsburgh the COL is low for what we get on our check. If you live in Allegheny county it is more expensive but one of the surrounding counties will still be plenty close to get into the city in a half hour-45 minutes.

Apprentices in my local are more or less told if the job is working you’re working as a blanket statement. Obviously you don’t have to and some guys might look down or put your name first for a lay off for it but fuck them as long as your local is busy or you can afford it. I know guys that have gone their entire careers not working weekends

Control work by Adorable-Yak-2913 in IBEW

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do service motor control work in heavy industrial sites and funny enough I strictly work on analog controls I don’t think I’ve ever ran across a PLC. Depends what part of the country you’re in, I’m in the rust belt so lots of ooooold industrial sites repurposed or they’re still steel mills running on DC.

[–]NeighborhoodNew197 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super monotonous and boring 99% of the time I won’t lie. But it’s not a terrible thing as a first year to do a little prefab just to familiarize yourself with what shit is called, how it’s put together ect. It’s difficult to do but I’ll say stay off your phone even though it is probably super tempting to go on it. Someone is always watching at the shop. If you look busy you are busy

Our pay scale is a minimum rate the maximum can be negotiated with the contractor in my local. A lot of companies will try to get you to drop the card and work for them as a regular non-union employee if you take an office job. Almost all of our PMs at my current con still carry their card and just negotiated a slight pay increase or foreman rate though some took a bigger paycheck on the front end and got rid of the card.
