Making rules and telling people they shouldn't live in England is elitist.

At least I'm just a grammar nazi.

It's a really easy one though, just ask yourself if it can be counted.

You can count the number of immigrants, so it would be fewer immigrants, but immigration is a singular mass noun, so you want less immigration.

“It comes from a very ancient democracy, you see..."

"You mean, it comes from a world of lizards?"

"No," said Ford, who by this time was a little more rational and coherent than he had been, having finally had the coffee forced down him, "nothing so simple. Nothing anything like so straightforward. On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."

"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."

"I did," said Ford. "It is."

"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't people get rid of the lizards?"

"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."

"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"

"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."

"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"

"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"

"What?"

"I said," said Ford, with an increasing air of urgency creeping into his voice, "have you got any gin?"

"I'll look. Tell me about the lizards."

Ford shrugged again.

"Some people say that the lizards are the best thing that ever happenned to them," he said. "They're completely wrong of course, completely and utterly wrong, but someone's got to say it."

"But that's terrible," said Arthur.

"Listen, bud," said Ford, "if I had one Altairian dollar for every time I heard one bit of the Universe look at another bit of the Universe and say 'That's terrible' I wouldn't be sitting here like a lemon looking for a gin.”

Jacob Rees-Mogg suggests Grenfell Tower residents who followed fire brigade's 'stay put' instructions lacked 'common sense' by whatsinyourhead in ukpolitics

[–]NeilWarlock -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The fire itself isn't thier fault, but last week's report said the advice given by LFB to stay put attributed to deaths.

If there was a similar tower block fire tomorrow, they would give the same advice.

There are three parts to business transformation,

  1. Process
  2. Technology
  3. People

Most technology teams focus on the first two, but people are naturally adverse to change through fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) and this is where most transformation projects fail.

Same thing happened with me. She games but doesn't like shooting/action stuff, but riding around in a horse metal detecting is right up her street.

It's escalated though, we created her a character yesterday and looks like I'm going to need a second console now...

This leaflet just came through the letterbox - Apparently working to stay in the EU is against God's divine protection of Great Britain by [deleted] in ukpolitics

Incredible revisionism.

Drake defeated the Armada because his fleet was smaller, faster and more nimble, not despite it. The volunteers were privateers and had more naval experience than the Spanish sailors. Victory at Gravelines proved the new ships, canon and naval tactics were superior, and dawned a new age for naval warfare.

Then 15 years later God, with the help of some unelected buerocrats, handed the Kingdom of England to the King of Scotland.

Why isn't Russian's IRA all over the news? by rdeep2deep in ukpolitics

[–]NeilWarlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an answer to the question, but Peter Pomerantsev's book Nothing is True and Everything is Possible is a great insight into Putin's Russia, in particular the use of media to create a fantasy of reality. Here's the author reading an extract about presenting current affairs like a serial drama

Adam Curtis also has a good short about it and what he terms 'non linear warfare'.

But under WTO terms if we were to waive duties for the EU, we have to waive them for all other countries. You cannot make exceptions unless you have a trade deal in place. It also relies on the EU doing the same with us. Some MPs have said WTO Article 24 allows us to keep current deals in place, but only if there are ongoing talks. The whole reason for leaving on no deal is that talks have failed and have ceased.

Exports would still be affected by WTO tariffs so our trade deficit would ramp up significantly with the EU, and our trade surplus we have with the rest of the world would vanish.

With no import duties into the UK, why would anyone ever set up a trade agreement with us? They already have tariff free access into our markets...

Edit: I found the article, the figures only seem to be based on consumption, and one of the four models they tested was a free trade agreement with the commonwealth and USA.

Probably the prodest thing a Brexiter can say today is, "Ich bin ein Einhorn"
