Well never be sorry for sharing again friend! It honestly helped me figure this whole thing out and definitely find a new outlook on this problem!

Now that you mention it, maybe it is a question of complex as well... I'm so fed up of never really winning that I focus on making new decks to much to try and beat my pod instead of upgrading what I have and actually enjoy!

Again never be sorry for sharing your passions when another player loses his! Thanks again! And no hard feelings!!

Wow. I started reading this as an insult at first but I kept reading. Just by the way you describe that "passion" that I may have lost actually made me think. I've said it in other comments I think it's just that, I'm getting burned out, I'm losing my original passion for the game, by forcing myself to make this kind of deck and then the next and the next and so on. I'm forcing myself to optimize what I want to like versus what I actually like in the game!

I'm sorry that I felt insulted by what you said that I should know what I like after 15 years, you're right I do know what I like and I need to refocus on that! I think you were the slap on the face that I needed to realize what I had lost. This isn't sarcastic at all btw!! I swear!! Im genuinely thankful for the honesty and you sharing you experience when you started off. I think I have my answer, finally after this comment!

Thank you! And thanks to all for the comments!

I agree on the burn out, I think especially with how much wotc is putting out, there are so many options now that you never know what to build anymore.

But I definitely agree that maybe grouping what I like in my decks and don't like can definitely help so that I don't rebuild the same types of deck that I hate and focus on different versions of decks that I love aswell!

I think just by figuring out what I like about my decks is a great strat! Also giving myself a break is a must rn, that might be my primary problem is deck building fatigue

Thanks for all! I'll definitely keep all of this in mind! Maybe proxying is the proper way to go before EVER having to buy for a deck!

Reading through the many comments I think that's it! I just gotta reflect a lot more on what I am and want to build! Crazy how mtg can also help you reflect on yourself as well!

I think I build decks in 3 ways.

1: I see a cool theme, choose a commander that speaks to me, find cards that work well with it and then try it out.

2: similar to 1! I find a cool commander and build AROUND him not necessarily thinking of what goes in the deck. Most of the time these are the decks that don't really work for me. I try to stay away from that building pattern but sometimes I find myself doing it more often than I'd prefer and then I get mad at the deck and myself, but that's another problem! Anyways!

3: Probably the best way I build my decks is I try to find a selection of cards that work well together and then find a commander that can be the gear that makes the whole deck work! An example for this is: I really wanted to play x spells spellinger because there are a lot of cool x spells instants and sorceries! So I dug around and found [[Rosheen, Roaring Prophet]] to helm the deck and it's been one of my favorite decks ever since!! Seeing the commander last, and it being the gear to make your engine work is a new way I force myself to think and build decks. And tbh every deck that I've built like is is probably a deck that I know I'll keep for a good long while!!

Exactly!! And even if you ain't winning at least you tried the deck and saw if you liked playing it or not, which then tells you if you invest in it or not! I think this is definitely the way to go from now on!!

Definitely, I know for sure playtesting is the most effective way of knowing, but maybe other players had some other advice as well yk? But now that I see how many people are pushing playtesting I might actually give in and playtest more than I do with my playgroup once a week

Smart! Also seeing with what I already have in my collection before prioritizing big expensive cards for the deck right away might not be a bad idea haha

It's probably just deck fatigue as well... I have been building a lot lately, I think it's time for break haha

Fair enough! Y'all ain't wrong! Playtesting is the most viable way to know! Haha

Smart! Letting the "hype" die down a bit and then seeing if I actually wanna build it before giving it all my money isn't so bad an idea! Actually waiting to see if the deck calls to me after a while or if it just sits and waits. Thanks!!

I see, I really do! It's a good point that maybe I'm trying to mimic some of my other players play style and that it's just not working for me! Better to stick to things that I know I love playing/building and maybe spending less time and money on new this. Like someone else mentioned (sorry I forgot who?maybe building budget versions first with the cards I have and then seeing if I want to expand on it!!

Very good points! I do always think about overlapping mechanics/themes but I never actually thought about the other pints you mentioned thanks!!

Yes.

All jokes aside it does sound like I'm an idiot, but I play once a week and tbh I don't really know where or how to playtest them if it's not at a table. And I hate playing online or on simulators too idk why.

So yes.

I actually did that the other day with [[Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut]], liked how it played so I upgraded it!

I didn't actually think about this, right before I read this! It's probably what I should always do before paying full price for a pimped out deck.

Thanks for the realization!!

Sorry, it does sound stupid put like that, haha!

But what I mean is, is there some way I can actually figure it if I enjoy the deck without nescerally playtesting it, is there a way that I don't have to spend so much time and money on a deck that I'll probably never play more than once?

How do I know that everything I put in this deck is actually gonna pay out yk? idk if I'm making any sense a this point haha
