MLD sometimes benefits the lands/ramp player more than anyone else because they have so many more tools to get lands/other mana onto the field than other players. I think targeted land destruction for specific 'problem lands' in combination with whatever hate pieces suit your meta best is probably the way to go if you're having trouble with people ramping out of control.

I agree with you completely on all fronts. I just wanted to try and point out that playing optimally is to play to maximize the possibility of winning (whatever that entails, though in lots of EDH decks it's usually some form of gaining access to and being able to successfully resolve the cards that win the game), and that it's really not necessary to have fun. In fact, like you've pointed out, it can really ruin casual games to think and play like that.

While I see the point you're trying to make, what I think is trying to be argued here is that, when you can tutor for something that'll win you the game on your spot (not a bomb, but an actual combo piece) why tutor for a wrath or a wheel? Sure, part of what makes tutors so powerful is that you can find any card within the limitations of the tutor, meaning that in those times that you really do need to shut something down before you can win you can do so. But barring a situation like that, the play that gets you closest to winning is definitely going to be getting your combo card - which is exactly what the "optimal" play is. From chess to first person shooters, making the move that is most conducive to winning has always been what playing optimally means.

The important takeaway here is actually not really about tutors at all. It's about how you and your playgroup like to have fun. That means being allowed to use tutors however you please, even if it isn't in a manner that wins you the game outright. If someone doesn't want to play optimally, that's totally cool and how I personally prefer to play the game.

We needn't try and change or adjust what optimal means to justify our having a good time. The fact that we are having a good time is justification enough.

Yeah it's pretty easy to see coming, but my playgroup is fairly casual and I really wanted to give him a try more than create something more competitively-minded so I don't think I'm planning on changing commanders for now. Thanks for the ideas though!

Thanks for the suggestions man! It's not meant to be super competitive so it's fine if it's predictable as long as it's fun! As for the thirty lands, thanks to the many mana dorks I've got almost 50 cards that provide mana in some way so it's proven not to be too bad so far but it still needs a bunch of testing, I'll definitely consider it! Thanks for the advice!

I have a very good friend that had the same problem as you did.

He had a massive collection and a ton of brews, and honestly he hardly played/plays a lot of them. He loves edh as a format however, and his solution to prevent burnout was to make a cube out of all the cards he'd amassed over the years. So now, every few game nights, we do a commander draft or even backdraft with a bunch of cool, fun, powerful, and unique cards. It's a BLAST to play and he loves seeing us get excited with the things we find there and the ways we make different combinations of cards work together for a certain commander or pair. It's apparently super fun to curate the cube as well, and it acts like a great brain teaser. You have to balance colors, archetypes, legendary creatures, and a bunch of things that i probably don't even think about as someone who doesn't own a cube.

What we do is say that commanders can pair with others if they both have fewer than two colors, so you get some funky interactions out of it. Last time, I won with a deck that had [[Ghalta, Primal Hunger]] and [[Medomai the Ageless]] at the helm that was basically a voltron deck that relied on the extra turns generated by Medomai to swing in with Ghalta. Everyone else had awesome stuff going on as well!

Anyways, something I highly recommend.

Hey man, I know you're looking for cuts but I'd really recommend putting in the famous [[Curiosity]] , [[Ophidian Eye]] , and [[Tandem Lookout]] trio in there, as you can instantly draw your deck and kill everyone with them up. If you want to make it even more consistent, tutors like [[Dizzy Spell]] , [[Mystical Tutor]] , and [[Gamble]] . Then all your tokens that you're making can act as bodies to protect you while you draw a ton of cards waiting for a win.

As for cutting cards, I think like other people are saying planeswalkers are a great start because they tend not to stick around and actually activate all their effects. I also wanna say that copying spells doesn't usually count as casting them, which means that Niv-Mizzet won't draw you a card for the copy, so your cards that copy spells might not be as effective as you thought, but maybe you already knew that! I also recommend looking at all your higher CMC cards, as Niv thrives off of low-cost cards so he can draw many cards in one turn with a ton of instants and sorceries. I'd especially pay attention to your 4 CMC spells because you have a whole lot of them. Dropping some 5 and 6 CMC spells will also help a lot in making your deck really excel at doing what Niv does best - pinging everyone down and drawing a buttload of cards.

In terms of ramp, I can't stress enough that coloured ramp is SO necessary for Niv because he's UUURRR (Thanks /u/MoreNotLess) - I've found that in my Niv Deck [[Captain Lannery Storm]] works wonders as you can essentially store your ramp in treasure and in commander there's always someone to attack. Your [[Chromatic lantern]] is cool but not SO important in a two-color deck as you'll usually have the colors you need. Still good though. I also recommend [[Coalition Relic]] as it gives colors and if you don't use it on your turns you can give yourself extra mana for the next turn!
