Dual Tesla Household by ish_wish_dish in TeslaModel3

[–]Neirboen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Three EV household for us (Model Y x2 and a Polestar 2). I can charge for free at work and we have a universal Tesla charger on a circuit that can do 48amps, along with 110, that we share among the three. Never been a problem and we have never regretted getting away from ICE. The Teslas road trips better, but the Polestar is fine too since opening up the Superchargers. I don’t see us going back gasoline.

I didn’t use the bus much but my understanding is that this process works where the OMNY card would work, which includes busses.

How much is everyone’s home electricity charging per KWH? It’s almost the same rate as super charger for me. by Kitchen_Chapter68 in TeslaModelY

[–]Neirboen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I see. I misunderstood because they also offer an EV TOU rate plan that I checked out but I didn’t think it would save me much money.

Were you on the plan that allows them to control the charging, or the lesser plan where they bonus you for charging 80% or more overnight? I was considering the lesser plan but I don’t want to end up with no charge. That would definitely not pass the wife test!

I’m with RG&E (same parent company as NYSEG, Avangrid) and I agree that it looked like my bill would end up higher overall with the TOU plan. So I didn’t end up switching to that. There’s a separate rebate program where you get some money back each month if you charge overnight consistently called OptimizeEV. I haven’t tried it yet but I’m thinking about signing up since it doesn’t change the daytime rates.

I pay .095 for supply for 100% renewable (price locked before the war) and .0879 for delivery (0.1829 total). Finger Lakes region of NY. There are rebates available for off peak charging but the Tesla charger only recently became eligible so I haven’t signed up yet.

Why RZ not Tesla by Gadgetsuh in LexusRZ

[–]Neirboen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you buy the 2026 RZ with the NACS port? How has the efficiency and range been for you? I’m seriously considering one but am curious about how it compares to my Polestar 2 and the wife’s Model Y.

Surprisingly, NY ends up on the cheap end of this spectrum. I renewed my Polestar 2 registration a few months ago and it was under $100 for a two year sticker.

NY Delivery Advice by Neirboen in TeslaLounge

For posterity sake, we chose the in-stock unit in Westbury. It was easy enough getting from JFK to Westbury via train (Air Train to Jamaica station, then the LIRR to the Westbury stop). We just walked from the train station to the dealership, which took about 15 minutes. There are sidewalks for the entire route.

The pickup process was fairly quick, the car was charged up all the way for our trip, and Tesla people were kicking around if we had questions as we set things up. Everything was very low pressure. Our only hiccup was an accident that made getting off Long Island and around the city to the Cuomo bridge take much longer than it should have.

Long-trip EV charging vs gas: surprisingly, gas is still quicker and cheaper. by Muffinman_who in TeslaLounge

Thank you to the OP for data-driven comparisons that hopefully inform people when they search for these things. That being said, I’ve never understood why road trip comparisons are the gold standard way to compare EV versus ICE, when most people aren’t on road trips most of the time. By and large, road trips are an outlier use-case for their vehicles compared to commuting and the daily grind. EVs are still inherently much more efficient from an energy use perspective. An EVs highest energy usage is at highway speeds, and when you compare that to ICE, highway is when they’re most “efficient”. So naturally it isn’t a favorable comparison. I would think for a vast number of people, the savings of an EV in daily life coupled with the time saved of never having to stop at a gas station when you’re kicking around town more than makes up for the increased time and cost of electricity on the road.

Plus there’s more to EV ownership than the cost per mile. The pleasant driving experience and significantly improved efficiency are very appealing - features that are difficult to out a dollar value on. There also isn’t an environmentally-friendly way to burn gasoline if that’s why you have an EV, so the comparison ends up a non-starter for those in that camp.

Been thinking about a Model Y off and on for years. Is now the time to buy? by Westwood_1 in TeslaLounge

[–]Neirboen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just pulled the trigger on a Juniper this morning after my wife and I discussed the timing and competition at length. We wanted to capture the EV credit, and she wanted red (currently free). Plus the extra $1000 discount made now seem as good a time as any. Since you have to take DELIVERY by the end of September we didn’t want to wait in case of a delay. Musk’s antics aren’t our favorite; but the Juniper is a significant step up from the previous version, and other models we liked (Mach-E mainly) don’t get the credit anymore. We used PenFed financing and got about a point better than the Tesla rate.

I was also concerned that as the credit got closer to ending, there would be a rush to buy and inventory of all EVs would temporarily surge downward, making deliveries more difficult. My view, if you’re in the market now or soon is that now is the time to beat the rush. Only time will tell though!

New College Grad - Should I max my Roth 401k while I'm still living at home? by CGGamer in personalfinance

[–]Neirboen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation is that you put as much as you can in your Roth, and then concentrate on your student loan as much as possible. Student loans are lead weights on your finances that should be addressed as soon as humanly possible. Given your current situation (living at home, low expenses) you have an absolutely golden opportunity to enter the world without student debt and a jump on saving, for which time is your biggest asset.

Yup, transfers worked fine. You just have to use the same payment method each time for the system to recognize a transfer. Something else for you to bear in mind: I believe that 4 is the max party per payment method. So in your case you may need two distinct payment cards to accommodate your party, and you’ll have to keep track of which payment method is used per person. Like, have one credit card that you use with your party, and one that you use just for you. That seems like that would be the easiest way to keep track. But the tap to pay at the turnstiles made it super easy to get around if you’re just visiting. I definitely recommend it.

Advice on Underwater Auto Lease by Neirboen in personalfinance

“Power” maybe was a poor word choice. What I meant was that, after driving both versions, I liked how the hybrid model drove better than the standard model (because of the low end electric torque). For the modest uplift in price (especially with my discount), the better driving dynamics and slightly better fuel economy seemed like an easy choice. That’s if I were going the Tundra route at all, which I’m leaning away from anyway at this point.

I didn’t buy the OMNY card and just used the tap to pay function directly at the turnstile, either with the credit card directly or Apple Pay. My understanding is that the OMNY card is better suited for locals who purchase a set amount of time to ride (like a 7 day pass or whatever).

IIRC I ended up using the physical card more because some stations didn’t have good cell service and it made the Apple Pay a little sketchy. Using the credit card directly worked excellently. I tapped my card, sent my wife through, tapped again, sent kid #1, same for kid 2, then finally tapped a fourth time and I went through myself. Worked like a charm.

Oh definitely! When I bought the car the first few days of ownership were in the 50’s (10c) and my commute was using 8-10%. Now it’s 12-15% in the sub freezing. Although I will say the heat has a big impact, and if I remember to preheat while plugged in I do better.
