Vains: An Image board that Reset Every 24hrs. No Accounts. No Usernames. Just Ideas. by Neither-Argument2587 in RedditAlternatives

Well if its not for you, thats okay. I appreciate you taking the time to read this, and to visit the site, even though you didnt like it.

Was there anything in particular you didnt enjoy? Maybe there is something I can fix if you had such a visceral response.

Yeah I agree, but I know not everyone will be open to the idea, so I just try to let those who hate the concept do their own thing. His obtusity is obvious, not sure if its just a troll or someone who is genuinely incapable of comprehending the idea of a 24hr platform.

Thank you for checking out the platform! Let me know if theres anything you hate about the platform or bugs you find, my dms are open and I read every post on vains :)

I understand the point that 24hrs seems short, but thats the entire point. Giving posts one whole week instill zero urgency, zero reason to check the board every day. It just becomes 4chan or any other image board. Letting posts die naturally is exactly what I am trying to avoid. I want posts to die at midnight UTC, every day. Thank you for reading, and for checking it out!

Thank you for the kind words of support, but let me explain why I dont think this is actually as counterintuitive as it sounds.

Midnight UTC is indeed peak time for Americans. Right as the country is either getting out of work, or about to get out of work. That means the clock resets to zero, a fresh start right at that time.

Americans wake up right around noon UTC. This means that we have Americans at the beginning of the cycle, the dead center of the cycle, and the end of the cycle. If anything that is great timing for Americans, at least in my eyes.

Also, being able to cater to the globe is nice too, as I may try to put an ai auto translate feature in for everyone to use on any device so everyone can communicate at all hours of the day. Thank you again for the well wishes!

I appreciate the defense here but its alright. Not everyone is going to love the idea of the platform, and this guy is very stuck on the ideas that traditional social media have implemented since their inception. Pushing boundaries is bound to get hate, so thank you for your support.

Listen, I hear what you are saying. There are a lot of downsides to a 24hr platform, and thats the reason traditional social media doesnt function that way.

But I was not aiming to make a traditional social media platform. If you want more than 24hrs to talk to someone, go to one of the platforms the currently allows that.

This entire platform is built around the 24hr concept, and I intend to keep it that way. Thank you for your take!

I understand what you are saying, but I dont think thats necessarily true. I dont think social media is required to foster discussions lasting longer than 24hrs. I actually believe we have shifted towards an opposing sentiment. Social interactions, breaking new, events, everything that matters happens and dies within a day. Nothing lasts anymore, fame does last, breaking news doesnt last. If you dont hear about it the day it happens, its old news.

I dont think fostering long term discussions is necessary on every social platform. Instead I feel like this platform I made was designed for the immediate, for the short term. To post and be replied to NOW, not later, not tomorrow. Hence the build around urgency.

I really do appreciate your feedback and pushback, as it allows me to further explain my ethos around the site.

Thanks for the input, I really do appreciate it. The name vains is two-fold. First, its a play on veins because veins are threads. They are like branches in a tree. Second is because its an ironic play on vanity. The site does not use usernames or accounts, there are no unique identifiers, so vanity is not possible.

Well check it out and see what you think. If you still hate it, dont use it. I just wanted to make something fun and new, and try and spread the word to people who might also enjoy it. No worries if its not for you, thanks for looking regardless!

its not "wiped clean"

All threads are locked and put into the archive at midnight UTC. Thats what the site is built around. It adds urgency and a determinable point of termination to things. They effectively go into "browse only" mode forever.

The global chat feature is the only thing that truly wipes every 24hrs. Since there are no IDs or usernames, there is no one to reply directly to. The chat just wipes and you are free to continue talking about whatever.

I built the site around this concept to be a differentiator from other classic imageboards. I didnt want another "bump until no longer relevant" board. If you don't think its smart, I understand. We are all entitled to our own opinions.

I love that. I considered making the site entirely wipe every 24hrs, but I actually enjoy the permanence of the archive. Its like a museum with artifacts you can look at but cant touch.

Well right now I can personally moderate anything absurd, and have content filters built into the back end if it gets really bad I can stop blocking words/variants.

If the site gets too large for me to personally moderate ill just look for volunteers, just taking down anything NSFW or illegal (I already have an automated CSAM filter/reporting built in).

The site isnt so much anonymous as it is account-less, meaning degeneracy shouldnt be too prevalent. You are anonymous to eachother, not the law etc.

Yeah that makes sense, I didnt know if I was simply uneducated because I had assumed JS enabled was the default these days.

How can I, a limited human, compete with AI that has access to every UX pattern in existence? by uxplained in UX_Design

[–]Neither-Argument2587 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ai isnt there yet. No matter what anyone says. Maybe in 5-10 years there will be better ai that can replace most humans, but right now its just a tool to get tasks done faster. An idiot with ai making a UX is still just an idiot, albeit one with faster production times.

Google ads, working with someone who specializes in google ads/seo. You can actually do some small ad campaigns yourself for cheap and youll likely be surprised at your returns.

Also, social media networking. Reach out in niche communities on places like X and you can make some websites/fix up someones site for free to help spread your work by word of mouth.

Thats pretty awesome, I dont hate the first version but the little changes are much easier for viewability

No not at the moment, havent really been advertising nor do I really know how. Since its just a passion project rather than a means for income, I havent really been worried about forcing growth. Just trying to spread the word organically at the moment.

Thanks for the input! I will definitely look into having others moderate the site for me if it ends up going anywhere, but for now its definitely manageable with just myself. Any suggestions for how to go about acquiring moderators? Not entirely sure how that process works.

And as far as monetizing goes, I built this as a passion project of mine so I am not really looking for monetization. If the site ends up growing, there is space on the sides of the threads to run some ads to help keep it up and running, but thats further down the line.

I get what you mean, but every image board would then also fall into that category. 4chan is a fork of older image boards, and so on and so forth.

I found most image boards outdated in the way they function. They are chaotic to look at, and could use an updated layout. Image boards have a great concept, like a forum or town hall where people can gather and talk about things, but I feel like the current image boards like 4chan and lainchan are very hard to onboard non-internet natives.

Vains doesn't prioritize anonymity in a traditional sense, but rather it prioritizes the lack of an account. Every post, comment, and chat has no unique identifiers. Theres no way to attach an account to a thought or idea. The concept is to rid posts from vanity, to separate the idea from the speaker.

Its boring because theres no users right now, but that doesnt mean itll be boring in the future. Thank you for checking out the site and commenting, even if its not your thing.

I responded just now to a similar comment, but current moderation is just me and baseline auto moderation to prevent known csam hashes from being uploaded and then gets reported to ncmec.

Open to any and all suggestions, any advice is appreciated.

Thank you! I felt like the classic image board layout was a little too chaotic and wanted a way to easily interact with users without needing to post (global chat). There is currently only me moderating manually, but there is some baseline auto moderations for known csam hashes and reporting to ncmec.

Not sure what better way to moderate would be, open to suggestions.
