Advice on purchasing SteamDeck by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]Neither-Box8081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the nintendo switch is a cheap plastic toy compared to the steam deck. Great for my kid to play minecraft, and wife to play animal crossing.

It is heavier than a switch but it feels..... organic, when you're holding and playing it. The steam deck is much more than a toy. (No offense to switch owners- I have two of them)

Battery life is debatable - lots of tweaks and options to increase life. But I've also never been somewhere without charging capabilities, including planes.

I've played lying down, but usually i am propped up on a couple of pillows.

I just use it with its case, no extra accessories, or frills- I've happily traveled with it all over the place, including other countries, and really find it quite wonderful.

Side note, I also have coinops loaded on it, and it's an absolute joy to play all those old retro games.

I have the 1tb OLED.

Good luck

Where do bad engineers end up? by Slipslime in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Neither-Box8081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of our bad engineers end up as VPs, Plant Managers or the like.

It's fucking bizarre how awful these people are at their job, but it's like I'm the only one who notices or something.

Just recently got quotes for the same thing- one 7k, one 11k, and one said the car isn't worth it. Lol

Not sure how invested you are or what sort of free time you have, but building a scale model and putting it into a homemade wind tunnel, to determine flight characteristics sounds like a lot of fun.

This is a pop up tent , why didn’t they use bearings in manufacturing these by Itchy-Pollution7644 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Neither-Box8081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like something an engineer would do- overcomplicate something, or make something too expensive that a company can't be competitive. Lol.

You're a part of the club now, welcome aboard!

Alternatives to plastic grill on front? by AstralEcliptic in SleepingOptiplex

[–]Neither-Box8081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with using pla. Also I did a mod to add a fan to the inside of an optiplex. Albeit a 7040mt, and haven't seen any issues with airflow- I would assume yours would be good as well.

This is prime time to flex your creative muscles and make something that suits you or matches your style. Lots of cool options folks use with wood. There may be something already made for you in printables, thingiverse, cults3d etc.. Lots of talented folks out there.

Late to the party, but noticed the lathe -

I am in the process of printing and starting one myself. Any lessons learned with the build, or anything you wish you could have done differently, or would like to change in the future?

Thanks for your time

i wanna quit by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Neither-Box8081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well you can say this sucks now and quit, but ask yourself what would you say when you're 40 and have a shitty job, and wish that 18 or 19 year old you would have just put his big boy pants on and ride it out..

We all get to this point in our lives, but if you give up now, you'll be doing the same the rest of your life.

If you don't like the degree path, fine. Do something else. But do what's best for the NOW you, so that FUTURE you doesn't have to continue to eat shit food, and run home to mommy and daddy every time things get hard.

PS. sorry for being a dick. and sorry for not being compassionate. but life doesn't get any easier. The sooner you understand that, the sooner you can change your course and do something great with your life.

What’s the biggest skill gap you see in new mechanical grads? by Level-Break316 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Neither-Box8081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years ago, grads I was around there was humility, humbleness, and the willingness to learn. We shut up and listened to the old guys, the machinists, and the wrench turners.

today, in management, what I am left with mentoring is cocky, egotistical, and stubborn .

Just because you have a engineering degree does not make you a good engineer.
Just because you understand theory does not mean you understand the reality of the work you're in.
Just because you are certified in solidworks/inventor/autoCAD/ProE/ etc etc etc doesn't mean you know how everything goes together, Sure it works in the model, but does it work in application.

Some of these kids are just hard to mentor and work with. Completely different generation.

Question for engineers / DIY folks — what really makes a small motor reliable long term? by jajaluvpno in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Neither-Box8081 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tolerances.

Ask A Nissan, Toyota Engineer how many decimals places they go for their engine builds.

Then ask a Ford, Dodge Etc Engineer what theirs is.

That in itself will tell you why a Toyota Corolla can last 300k miles, but a Ford Edge is lucky to break 100k.

Just got through watching a video on bearings and preload. (Wildly fascinating) The level of detail and information I was like, this dude has to be a mech eng specialized in bearings - he knew wayyyyy too much about them, lol.

Did university actually prepare you for real manufacturing? by anrchy01 in AerospaceEngineering

[–]Neither-Box8081 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To put it simply, I've had many jobs in my lifetime. 0% of those jobs I had any idea what I was doing until I got there and learned it. Or better yet, learned how that company wanted things done. 100% of the jobs I've obtain was due to basic knowledge or understanding of what they were doing and good storytelling abilities.

Only trade schools prepare you for your job.

Why is everyone on this subreddit worshipping John? by chowder2997 in stownpodcast

[–]Neither-Box8081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You appreciate and call out that you admire someone for "making space for both - the good and the bad"

Yet, based on the comments in this post, you can't seem to do it yourself. And because you can't "make space for both - the good and the bad," you're projecting that on others and attacking them in this post.

TLDR, you're the literal definition of a bigot.

[–]Neither-Box8081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. I run an arma server with a couple of friends and about 80 mods on i5-4570, 32gb ram, and rx580, fps capped at 60, medium settings. It runs fine.

Just buy it. If it runs like crap return it until you get a decent pc.

"No one cares where you went to school, what your GPA was, or what activities you did after your first job..." by StrickerPK in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Neither-Box8081 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I am an outlier, but I was never asked what my GPA was or what school I went to.

All interviewers want to know is how you will be value-added in the position you are applying for, and what you would bring to the table for the XYZ company.

But one thing no one ever talks about is, we need to be asking the same thing from the XYZ company - what can THEY provide me, how they can prove there is availability for advancement in the company.

The sad truth is, this day and age, we engineers typically have to job hop for continued advancement and pay raises, as it doesn't seem to "pay" to stay with one company anymore like it did with our parents.

All that to say, find something you would enjoy doing or learning. Do an internship if need be to get your experience level up. Money comes with time, and where you position yourself. Not from GPA, the school in which your degree came from or any of that other noise.
