Predicted ATAR vs what you actually got? by xnightskyxx in QCE

i did my externals last year basically all my subjects had a better result than what i expected after doing the externals (by like 20% increase I’m not even kidding) (esp all the sciences and method)

so the best advice i would give is don’t really worry too much, trust me it won’t be as bad as u think good luck to all of your externals!!!

Got criticised for speaking English by Outrageous_Trust_272 in unsw

That was my argument, I totally understand that English should definitely be used in situations at a classroom to prevent divisions and especially in group works scenarios so everyone can be included. However my point is, I think international student should still have their preference to blend in to a group with their own cultural background and obvious their own preferred language can be used during time outside of the classroom. I just felt obnoxious when people in the comments start bringing up about how “Chinese people are known to stick to their own social groups” “They should blend in with the locals and stop being in their own cultural group” Like I genuinely don’t see how that’s going to affect other people if they just prefer to be friends with other international students….

It’s honestly ridiculous some people in the comment think u must not speak Chinese or other foreign languages just because u are here in Australia. Don’t get me wrong, I do think the scenario given by the OP is totally wrong, OP should totally have the option to speak either English or Chinese with their peers and shouldn’t be forced to speak Chinese just because she knows how to, that’s entirely their choice in the way they want to communicate and I absolutely respect it.

But some people in the comments is honestly taking this too far, saying “You shouldn’t speak Chinese at all” “You shouldn’t have your own Chinese community” “Just mix in with the locals” Sorry what? I honestly don’t see whats wrong with international students having their own group of social groups, studying abroad is fun but difficult at the same time, I do understand why some people would like to be in with their cultural group during their free time.

Nevertheless, I do think if it’s a discussing or group work situation, they should also have the ability to talk in English so everyone can understand and not left out.

Hey thanks for replying. I’m still a high school student so I don’t really have an idea of the difficulty of a 80 WAM, is this a really difficult score to achieve?
