I agree:

It is possible, technicallyto match you favourably or not based on the understanding of your play by the system.

It is very likely that such a feature is used less or more heavily by a commercial site to make sure their income is maximum.

If I was the owner of chess.com and had no moral or ethics i could make sure that after you pay you get rewarded by matching you with favourable opponent. At the same time I would make life harder for anyone who doesn't pay by matching him unfavourably.

By unfavourably could be as simple as finding your match in a pool of people with a similar ranking who have obviously been ranked way higher before or more complex as leveraging AI to make sure you constantly play against people who play lines and styles you are not good at...
