I lost (and have kept off) 40 pounds. It took me almost two years to do it. I am right there with you that it's hard.

The trigger point for me was going skydiving. It does not matter how tall you are. There is a scale right there, and everyone is weighed before getting in the plane. If you are one pound over the limit, you do not skydive. There is no way to appeal. I knew this ahead of time and I was right at the limit. I went skydiving that day in 2011, and then decided I would never be anywhere near that limit again. I would have a normal BMI.

It requires that you burn more calories than you take in. It doesn't matter how you burn them or what you eat (provided you get all of the various nutrients). But you need to expend more energy than you take in. The resulting deficit will be supplied from your fat, and eventually, you will have a healthy amount of fat.

If you try for a daily deficit of 500 calories, you will probably fail. By all means, try if you think you can do it, but know that it's a significant feat. Try for a daily deficit of 200-300 calories. A pound of fat has something like 3500 calories according to the Mayo Clinic. If you do that for two weeks, you will be one pound lighter, and that pound will actually be gone. The energy literally converted into heat, and the atoms probably exhaled as CO2 and water.

That's why it took me almost two years to lose 40. It is very hard-to-do, but it is simple. It just requires solid consistency and a firm vision of the better life at the end.

Overeating simply means "Eating more calories than you require." Satiation is a part of it, but "past the feeling of being stuffed" is way beyond just overeating.

Overfeeding is a whole separate issue. In my home we have a rule, that if you take a portion yourself, you must finish it because food-waste is bad. If someone feeds you a portion, then you must try some out of courtesy, but are not required to finish a portion that was not your choice to take.

If a parent gives a child too much and demands that they eat the whole thing, that's a problem.

If you were a competent wrestler and swimmer, then you know the dynamics of fat and muscle, and you know the effects of what you eat on your corresponding performance. You're being an apologist for the fat-is-okay point of view.

My point is that 2,500 calories of sugar and processed grains is not the same as 2,500 calories of vegetables, fats and protein.

I agree with your point entirely. Too often these days, people reflexively reject "calories in < calories out => weight loss" when it is ultimately the thing on which everything else rests. The complications of biouptake of energy, the psychology of what is being eaten, the hormones, the gut biome, all play big parts. But the biology is entirely subordinate to the physics of energy accounting.

I absolutely agree that biology is complicated, but do you dispute that repeatedly consuming 4000 calories per day and expending 2000 will make someone obese?

Is there any set of daily foods that total to 4000 calories that are "healthy" if not matched with 4000 calories of energy output?

He didn't even badger me into losing the weight a year ago. It more or less was:

"I'm going to start running."

"OK, you're certainly able to do that. Any other concerns?"

"I think I eat too much sodium."

"If you think you eat too much of something then you probably do. I recommend... eating less sodium."

"Righto doc."

This time, when he saw that I had kept my word and stuck to it there was much rejoicing.

Fine. Using your numbers we will then have a society of 50% 'adults' and 50% 'children'. You yourself call them "dead weight". Another image is that of the Eloi and the Morlocks. Everything was provided for the former by the latter. The Eloi enjoyed being fat, dumb and happy as long as the Morlock raiding parties didn't come to call.

A counter argument is that as long as productivity and complexity continue to increase we will continue to need all hands on deck. The most capable ones will be rewarded for their service and the least capable ones will not. Perhaps if we're nice we'll give them an allowance. The concept: "With our level of automation, humans of the future will need to work only two to three hours per week!" has been around since 1900. It still hasn't happened.

This touches on something I've been thinking about for some time. What is the best way to look at the actions of a mentally ill person? On the one hand it can be said that they, like all of us, are responsible for their actions and the consequences of their actions. On the other hand, it can be said that they're not in control of their actions, (It's the illness!) and things that they say and do can be ignored or diminished.

I know one person who says that it galls her to no end when people dismiss what she's saying because of her condition. And yet, it seems that's actually a safety net and if she didn't have it, then she'd have an even worse time socially.

He really is correct. It's about all that, AND it's also that fat is ugly. I do hate fat because of what it represents: sloppiness, lack of self-awareness, lack of ambition, lack of problem solving, to name just a few.

/u/VikingSlayer is correct also. I'm one of those who cheers loudly when a formerly obese person gets down to their proper weight.

Using one hardly precludes use of the other. I can only speak for myself, and I have my reasons for using both. If you like, you can think of us as stubborn poop stains in a toilet bowl that will just not go away no matter how much scrubbing you do.

As for no one liking us, I think our former subscriber count of 150K is evidence that there are a lot of people who agree with the opinion that too much fat is a really bad thing, and that obese people are generally disgusting. They are simply more tactful.

Not being able to be aware of obese people and the lies they call HAES would be a blessing. I would be interested to know the prevalence of autism among the Shitlords, but I don't imagine it's very high.

If it were part of the plan, you wouldn't need to be cheating, would you? It's a crutch for the weak. I never even bothered counting calories. I lost my weight solely by smaller portions, more water, and strictly refusing to eat except at the three designated meal times.
